Wireless Service Off of Sprint's Network??
Does anyone have any good answers or experience with Sprint off network? Specifically I am referring to going north of Green Bay, WI where Sprints network ends. The reason I ask is that previously I have had service with AT&T and Cingular and their TDMA networks had coverage or roaming coverage in most areas where I travel. With Sprint, Sanyo 4900 latest PRL, I get spotty at best coverage where I previously had near perfect coverage on previous carriers. Even when I get coverage if I am driving I am prone to frequent drop-offs. I have contacted Sprint sales and engineering and they claim the 4900 is their best so far. I do love Sprints on-network coverage and call handling but the phone seems subpar off network. I spend about 4 to 5 w...

You might have missed the boat with the 4900 as it does NOT have CDMA 800 (Verizon's main frequency) and they have should have told you that when they were talking with you. Most of the digital roaming is Verizon (which I've been pleasantly surprised to find on my F & C America Plan with PRL 10021). The Sanyo phones are NOT known for real-world signal reception. The phone you need if you don't need Vision is the Nokia 3588i. Has CDMA/AMPS 800, CDMA 1900. I have one and use it all over the country in my 18-wheeler. It has good signal strength and reception, even out in the 'sticks'.

Thanks for the info. Well I don't really need Vision but being a tech junkie I would probably get a vision phone just to play with it. Any suggestions on other models? I have been looking at the samsung vga1000 or the new sanyo 5500. My biggest thing is the speaker phone, it is a feature I love to use which is why I am leaning towards the sanyo. 🙂

Another pt to make. I have PRL 100018 but supposedly I was just updated 2 weeks ago. Should I have PRL 100021?

Definitely call *2 on Friday and ask for a PRL update. That might solve some of your roaming problems, but that particular update added alot of Verizon 800 CDMA roaming.
