Post-merger question

I switched from Nextel to Sprint just before the merger. I'd like to know if I can use my nextel phone on my sprint account now, or maybe in the near future. Thanks.

Let the merger go through first... I swear everytime a merger is announced people think it happens overnight...

Not this merger, especially with the technology issues.

i agree this merger is not going to be anything like at&t and cingular. those 2 were 100% compatible and the merger went threw in a flash. sprint and nextel nothing jointly for at least a year and a half in my opinion.

as to your phone question. never. the new company will be switching to all cdma. and hopefully using qchat

nextel will continue to use their iden network for around 2-3 years through 2007 then mainly with centric customers using push to talk through 2008+. nextel and sprint would have dual phoens. iden/cdma phones that might or might not include qchat. i belive they will deploy qchat in the 2007-2008 time phrame becuase it would be better to deploy qchat over ev-do rev a, then rev- o.. any questions please ask.

Or better yet, ask MarkF. in the Nextel forum...since this is where Nextel18 got the info in the first place.

give it a chance, the fcc and other parties did not even ok it yet. if and when it does get the official approval from all govt and reg. agencies, both compies will have to add IDEN and CDMA to thier respective phones. At this point nextel makes out because nextel customers can not roam off anothers tower so if there was no IDEN tower, you were S.O.L. to get service. at least sprint (CDMA) has dual and tri mode phones that cane catch anothers tower (except nextel) to get service. I would guess in about 8-9 months both should have at least 1 or 2 phones that are compatable.

Listen, Nextel was going to CDMA because IDEN is outdated and will not do Fast Data so NEXTEL customers will be getting new phones after the merger. They are getting Nextels PTT to work on Sprints System (It will Work).

"They are getting Nextels PTT to work on Sprints System (It will Work"

yep. its over the ev-do rev a system in the 2007-2008 time frame by using qchat. (say thanks to qualcomm in developing that wonderful technology for nextel. nextel also has exclusive rights so that no one in the usa can use it.)

i belive that now nextel/sprint will deploy dual mode iden/cdma phones to cover the great qualities of iden which is just push to talk and the wonderful qualities of cdma/sprint network which is call quality and data speeds/content.

later on they will probably be a dual iden/cdma phone with qchat.

things should be great and this company will be very powerful.

The new company will migrate to CDMA over time but Nextel customers will not get new phones after the merger. iDEN will stay in place for 4-5 years.

"but Nextel customers will not get new phones after the merger"

i disagree. nextel/sprint mentioned in the teleconf that motorola might make a dual phone that has both iden/cdma networks and the good qualities of each. (iden=push to talk. Cdma= good network, capacity, and data products/speeds)

so dont say customers WILL NOT, becuase its a big possibility they WILL. (after the merger gets closed of course)

Nextel customers will not be FORCED to get new phones. If they want to migrate to a dual band phone they can. The dual band phone won't be out until 2006.

"Nextel customers will not be FORCED to get new phones"

i never said that nextel customers will be Forced to get new phones.

"If they want to migrate to a dual band phone they can. "

obviously.

" The dual band phone won't be out until 2006."

well if the merger closes at around the 3rd quarter of 2005 then obviously 2006 might be the time for a dual band phone. although it could be sooner if they enter into any kind of agreement prior to the close of the merger.

" The dual band phone won't be out until 2006."

you seem to be very confident in saying that. i dont know why you are becuase you dont know EXACTLY what nextel/sprint/motorola will do from now till 2006+.

we will let nextel/sprint/motorola tell us becuase ...

very good post. also you have to add that nextel and sprint will be able to deploy equipment on each other's cell sites instead of building new cell sites.(which is a pain and can take 1-2 years for the whole process to be completed) becuase of co-location of towers and things of that nature, it can help both of nextel and sprint's coverage and capacity in those areas where they put the equipment on the cell sites.
