what the heck does this mean?

I think it means that Sprint is finally trying to dig themselves out of the hole they dug. Sprint needs liquid assets and I am sure that 670 Million dollars will be somewhat of a help. However I am not sure that in the long-term it is wise to sell the towers and then lease them back???? That sounds like an unofficial way to get a loan, and more debt is the last thing that Sprint needs.

maybe it is a big step towards turning the company around, or maybe it another in a long line of bad business decisions. The answer to that exceeds my pay grade.

My own guess-

As it moves to 4g/wi-max, cellular towers will be less important. Wi-max will require different network structures. Sprint's unloading them now while the getting is good, then leasing them for as long as is needed until wi-max is built out everywhere.

Purely speculative, but that's what I would do if I was building a 4G network that required a different set-up than the existing 3G network.

That makes a world of sense for data. But unless I'm wrong voice coverage will still require cellular towers and voice coverage is where Sprint struggles. They are already on top in the data department.

While I use data and so does probably every phonescoop user, the average user with a good credit score (Kids and low and the credit challenged love data just as much as cell phone junkies) is more practical and cares more about reliable voice coverage.

Someone wrote a post regarding WiMax that I thought was dead on saying that most people will not understand it or really care.

By the way, I'm not bashing Sprint, I love Sprint (other than the fact that they do not like to pay me correctly).

It's allowing the iPCS not to charge for roaming. By doing this Sprint and iPCS would begin their next step into merging allowing reps to service iPCS customers with repairs, accessories and upgrads from IDEN to CDMA. I heard this news this morning.

Even if the WiMax Network being built will only consist of data, I bet there could be a way to offer voice services on that network. Look at all the VoIP services that are out there Vonage, Skype, etc. Even the new Nextel Direct Connect on Sprint phones (QCHAT) is a form of VoIP. Now, would it be harder if all 54 million subscribers were on a VoIP network at the same time, IDK that is above my job description. But I am sure there could be a way to over voice services with speed that high of data transmissions. I bet Video Calling could even be possible.
