Over the past few weeks, customers have flocked to Apple's online support forums to complain about weak or fluctuating signals leading to dropped calls and long download times.
"I have had my iPhone since this past Sunday," wrote one iPhone customer on an Apple support forum last week.
"The reception issues began immediately with 3G flip-flopping between 'no signal' and up to four bars - but usually hovering between none and two."

If you look at the ratings, most of the phones that Sprint carries that get rave reviews for reception quality are all the old school handsets with retractable antennas.
Think about it: if internal antennas are so good, why don't car kits incorporate the same design? Car cellular antennas are always external and very long.
Not to mention the fact that your hand and head will create more RF interference with the device than one with an external pull up.
No surprises here.

So true I hate how they have all but done away with retractable antennas ,it pisses me off! Not EVERYONE thinks internal antennas makes a phone more appealing.
At one time, Verizon wouldn't even allow a phone manufacturer to sell under their name if the handset didn't have an external, retractable antenna.
