Walkie Talkie Question
What's up with the walkie talkie feature that both sprint and nextel have? Can they communicate with each other yet or is that a feature that will take a couple of years to get done?
...
well they both serve to customers those push to talk services that nextel and sprint have but on the iden network and on the cdma network. so not sure what you mean whats up with that...
anyway with your 2nd part question that will be soon, but not yet. the gateway with iden/cdma is complete but they are still working on the conversion.
there will be 2 types of phones.
1. with the gateway= ready link and direct connect
2. ptt on iden and cdma with voice and ev-do.
...
How about existing devices?
...
what about existing devices? all those features will work meaning the direct connect and ready link from both nextel and sprint networks. nothing will change with that.

Do you see Sprint-Nextel making a push down the road to migrate Nextel-Nextel customers into a CDMA/iDEN phone?
...
yes i do think so.. a cdma/iden phone is a great way to start migrating over to the cdma side of things, but you will obviously have the push to talk of iden. by the way they are going to come out with that dual mode phone.

dude...read on in this forum...everyone's asking that question...sprint's ptt service is called ReadyLink, and nextel's is called Direct-Connect...sprint's works on CDMA and nextel's works on iDEN (which i believe is a type of TDMA)...they are incompatible...

Correct, iDEN is for the PTT and I think the cellphone portion is TDMA...
Sprint side is CDMA for ReadyLink and CDMA for phone calls...

If you really want to get technical, then you need to mention this:
Sprint's Ready Link service uses the same MDN (555)555-5555 to call people and to Ready Link people if they person they are "walkie-talkie" to has a Ready Link phone AND has the service on their plan.
Nextel uses a MDN (555)555-5555 to call people and a seperate set of digits and asteriks to Direct Connect people. Plus it doesn't matter if you Unlimited Direct Connect on your plan or you pay as you go.
That's why the current models of phones on the market right now on CDMA and iDEN sides will not be able to walkie-talkie each other. CDMA phones do not recognize symbols as part of a phone number.

The translation between the Sprint 10 digit number and iDEN's Direct Connect number is no match for a switch to translate.
It will be no big deal to do...
