I had been with Sprint for over 8 years. I used to think they should give me a break for being a long-term customer. I then was reminded, by users on this site, that very few businesses give breaks to long term customers. So, with that in mind, I started shopping around to see if I was getting the best deal out there. I learned I wasn't.
If you are serious about considering other options for phone carriers, you can always do some shopping around...

As far as being a "long time" customer, Try this. Next time you go to the grocery store, grab a loaf of bread, head up to the Customer Service desk, and ask what discount you get for shopping at that store for the last 10 years. Offer to show them your receipts.
Grocery stores charge activation fees when you walk in the door?
Grocery stores charge upgrade fees when you decide to use the express lanes?
Grocery stores charge extra fees with the sole purpose of recouping costs?
Customer loyalty is more powerful and important then many of the minions here realize.

See above...actually not to walk in the door, but if I want to use their service, yes.

Not express lanes, but Sam's Club does have a 2nd teir level for business customers that can take advantage of other discounts through Sam's Club.

Any business that gives service away will not be in business long.
It has nothing to do with being charged for a service, but be charged for the right to even be charged for a service.
The Sam's Club example does not work.
I pretty much will repeat what phortres said, do some research, then call up and ask for retention. Tell them you are thinking of cancelling, and they will be more than willing to try and keep you as a customer.
it doesn't matter if you've been with the customer for 20 years,
Tell that to Ron Popeil, I would be interested to know what response you get.
Customer loyalty is more important then grunts here realize.
But it would be nice if there were special plans for people who have completed a contract or two.
Then again, Sprint does give 5 or 10% discounts on MRC for people who renew their agreements.
I agree you should pay your bills on time and that it is not a special accomplishment.
Nowadays though, it's very common to rob Peter to pay Paul.
