Looking to leave T-Mobile...Need Input about the Competitor Carriers

sunilsonia

After staying for 4 long years with T-Mobile, I am finally willing to move to another carrier. As for the reasons why, please see my posting on this forum with the Subject Title, "Issues with T-Mobile PDA Support Group. Especially with the Blackberry 7105T!!!".

Now I know that most of you here will come back to me saying that, "it's a matter of what works for me best, go with them." Granted! So I've gone ahead and listed out some criterion that I am looking to measure against in my choice for next cell carrier. It just may turn that I may have to go back around the block once more because I've been with practically all the major carriers out there except VZW but I really do not intend to go there because they are very expensive in a lot o...

LOL, I know it's too much too read but atleast it covers about everything that has transpired with me from their end. Quite frankly, I needed to express my frustration with them here in its entirety and I'm sorry I practically bored you ****less!

I was with Sprint before but didn't have a great experience in my 2 years there (June 2000-July 2002). Please elaborate a bit for me on the improvements they may have made since the time I left them last.

I would switch to either Sprint or Cingular and what you should do instead of typing a 500-page paper about it, is to use each of the carriers’ trial period to determine which carrier is the best for you. None of us will know how your area is and how each device performs in your location. Thus, you should take the advantage and use the trial.

Agreed! But I am asking around to see if anyone else has used these carriers in the areas I have specified. I am essentially looking for opinions and observations about specific devices for use too as my posting mentions.

Very true, but everyone even in the same areas, have different experiences and thus it would be better to do the trials and decide on your own. I understand your point though.

Have you gone through and read the the post I referred to here from the T-Mobile forum? Can you suggest me a non-BB Data Device that Sprint currently offers?

Does the BB mean Blackberry or Broadband?

Can you ask the question again with the above answer which will help me answer your question?

Thanks.

The BB was BlackBerry....the question was can you suggest any non-Blackberry/non-Treo data devices that Sprint has out there that could potentially serve my purpose. These should be reliable as well.

Well, what do you need the data for? (so you don’t want the PPC I am guessing right since it is in the same boat as both the blackberry and the palm?)

Thanks.

Incorrect! I could go with the PPC. I said no to the Treo and Blackberry because:

1. My experience with the BB 7105T...it crashes quite consistently; AND
2. For the Treo, I've heard that is no better from the crashing point of view. But if this problem has been fixed in the 700, then I'd openly reconsider.

Is the Motorola Q ever going to be available for Sprint if it isn't as yet?

Yea the PPC is a great phone/device. I actually have no problems with the Blackberry. (I have the 7520) I don’t like Palm Treos.

Yes, Motorola Q will be available soon.

Sounds good! As it stands, my contract is due to expire on November 26, 2006. I'll probably get one of the better deals out at that time considering it is the holiday season.

I only said I'll move then. I didn't necessarily commit to joining Sprint again. Besides, I am not so sure they have improved any since July 2002 when I left.

Howdy howdy. Sprint-Tech here. I just checked my Network Tools/Maps, and based on the Zip Code you provided (75077), there is in fact good coverage in the area (on a scale of red-green, its green all-around... thats a good thing). In fact, it appears that there are 7 towers in that immediate area, all with EVDO capabilities. Based on the 21 day reports for those individual towers, none of them have had any major issues (success rates have all stayed at 95% or higher, which is great for towers that get used as much as these do!). As far as a Smart Device of some sort, i would recomend the Treo-700, simply because i'm more personally familiar with the Palm OS, but thats just my opinion. I havent heard any major complaints (from forums, custome...

Just noticed you didnt want a Treo. Again, i would suggest the PPC-6700, just make sure the software is updated BEFORE you try using it at all. Heres a list of the specs for that device:

Features:
Windows Mobile 5.0
Wireless High Speed Data Capability
Wireless E-mail
Sprint PCS Business Connection
GoodLinkTM Not currently available, anticipate commercial availability in early 2006
1.3 Megapixel Camera

***NOTE: Does not support Sprint Picture Mail/Video Mail ***

Built-In Bluetooth®Wireless Technology version 1.2
Built in Wi-Fi
Built-in Mini USB Port
Mini SD Expansion Card Slot
Built-In speakerphone
Customizable Photo Caller ID
2.5 mm Universal Jack
E-911 Emergency Location Capable

RCR,

Thanks for the specs and info here. I'll look into this device but my contract will not be over with until 11/26/2006. Only after this date will I consider anything in replacement of my sad ass T-Mobile RIM BB.

I'm not completely ruling out the Treo; it's just that I've heard horror stories from the prior models (phone crashes or auto reboots alot). So considering the horror story bit, I'm not considering going through that over again until and unless this issue has been addressed with the 700 series. If this is indeed the case, please tell me. Otherwise, the PPC sounds like the Taco Bell ad -- Good to go!

Are you a tech in the Dallas, TX area by any chance?

Just one more....is it true that the Treo 700 is better than its predecessor, the 650 -- which I may add had some significant issues with it? Please highlight for some of the differences between the two. Essentially, the question, "What makes the 700 above and beyond better than the 650?" It should potentially/possibly change my mind about what
I think about the Treos.

650 = 3G 1xRTT

700 = 3G-EVDO

650 = Sprint Vision

700 = Sprint Power Vision (waaaay more features)

650 = 32MB internal memory

700 = 60MB of internal memory

650 = full of problems (evern after 4 software upgrades/patches)

700 = not

...in closing, i like the 700... i am of course referring to the 700P (Palm OS, not the 700W, which runs Windows OS) ince Sprint does not carry the 700W. For more info on specifications concerning the 650vs700, i would do a side-by-side comparison of the 2, using the following links:

Thanks for the input on the 650 and 700 series Treos. I am still curious though as to what seems to be the level of issues with the 700w as snang mentioned. Would you care to provide a URL link to a source for this information? OR would I be able to find it on say http://www.cnet.com and just dig for the 700w Treo?

Wow! This is definitely one P(OS)DA to stay away from then! This review was a complete eye opener, thanks! I am imagining that the 700p and the PPC model you mentioned would be head over heels better than this....

I don't need to see any other reviews to know I don't want to mess with the 700w. The fact that there are 3+ threads about people wanting to trade a 700w for a 700p. One guy is even offering a 700w + $100 for a 700p. Ouch.

😁 After the doldrums that I was going through that you all must have read about in my earlier posting above, it pleases me enough to say that T-Mobile's Corporate Rep for the Consulting firm that I work for has saved the day. As a result of my interaction with her recently through both phone and e-mail discussions, I will be receiving a RIMM BB 8700g pretty soon. This is being shipped as I have been told via UPS Ground and so I'll be expecting to get this shipment in the next couple of days here in Tallahasse, FL. (P.S. - The phone (I believe) is being shipped from the Forest Park, GA or La Grange, GA warehouses so it should take not more than 2-3 business days to get here.)

I promise I will let you all know how the phone is once I get i...

I have carried a T-Mobile BlackBerry 7100t for over a year, used mostly in southern CA area but have also used in TX, CT, FL, IN, AZ, CO, MA, NH, OH, also in England (service was OK, not great, in England). I have to say that T-Mobile's coverage is not great in the US (I frequently switch to my personal Nextel phone when T-Mobile can't call out or drops the calls). But as for the BB device itself, not once has it crashed, not even hiccuped. Not once. I am tired of T-mo's lousy US coverage and poor sound quality, but I definitely give a thumbs-up to the BB 7100t as a device. Great speakerphone for holding teleconferences. Only caution our IT group gave us was when turning it on in a different country, take out the battery and reinstall it. Th...

It looks like you may not have read my original posts on the topic but that's ok. At any rate, I am no longer using my 7105t (not hte 7100t). And T-Mobile suggested that the 7105t was supposed to have resolved the issues the 7100t left behind. (Yeah right! It turned out for me to be a Treo in disguise.)

But let me tell you, the 8700g that I received in replacement totally smokes my old 7105t in every way possible. The Data, for starters, is EDGE and not GPRS. The 7105t took all day literally to bring up a simple website like http://www.aa.com. I took the same website on both my laptop and the BB 8700g. To my surprise, the 8700g uploaded the website quicker (slightly) than my laptop on a High Speed Corporate Network Connectivity. Th...
