just got a sprint treo 700p and I am unable to text message while roaming off sprint network!!! tech support has provided no solution! is this as good as it gets with sprint? is it a peculiar problem with the treo? or sprint service? or the local roaming partnership? any advice from wireless land?

By any chance are you in West Virginia or Virginia? I don't remember which of the 2 states were having issues for customers owning the Treo 700p and if it was voice and/or data services being effected. I know there's a new PRL available that is suppose to correct this issue. Dial *2 so a Customer Care Representative can flag your account for a PRL push to your Treo 700p.

I live in NC but it could all be part of the same network. What is PRL so I can sound like an informed consumer when I talk with tech support where I have logged many hours trying to come up with a fix! Would your response indicate their is likely a fix when they repair/upgrade the network or am I stuck like this?

Thx for the reply

i think most of text messaging works while roaming (digital) - call cust service and ask them if roaming in your area includes text messaging - they can see it - if it doesnt then you cant - if it does then it might be be with your phone or with its settings - cust service has something like adv tech support who can assist you in case tss tier 1 wont assist you - but in many cases gen cust service people or tss teir 1 can handle it - just keep on trying - 🙂

Generally SMS 'should' work while roaming... 'should' being the key word. Unfortunately, while off-network, Sprint isnt able to gaurantee that any other services will work, aised from those which we have agreed to by contract with that roaming partner. Typicaly, we only contract in/out Voice service (ability to make/receive calls) so any other services you wish to utilize may/may not be useable. Keep in mind: roaming = using another companies network, so, if the service doesnt work while roaming, its either your device (made by Palm, not Sprint) or the network youre using (again, not Sprint). So, dont get frustrated with Sprint (or its tech agents) for not being able to do much to help with that kind of problem.

No matter what the problem is....Sprint will have to fix that for you. If you are roaming off of the Sprint network, then you may not be able to Text or use other services. Sprint has deals with certain carriers to let Sprint customers text while on the roaming network. You will have to call Sprint and make sure that all of your setting are correct in your account. Roaming sucks.

PRL update won't fix this problem.

actually PRL (perfered roaming list) may fix this issue. On his out dated prl it might tell his phone to find carrier y where as carrier y does not allow sms text messages from sprint devices. sprint may have signed a deal with carrier x and carrier x allows sprint sms text messages on there network. if that is the case carrier x will have a higher priority in the new PRl then carrier y. Bottom line if you are haveing proble4ms in roaming, a PRL update can fit it because it may provide an additional network option.

some phones have it writen into there soft ware that text messageing is unavalible while in roam. or it could simply be sprint does not have a sms agree ment with the companys network you are roaming on.
