I don't really understand the difference between CDMA and GSM... 😕 With CDMA, can you roam to other countries?

I am thinking about getting the SLVR Lc7 when it comes out... will I be able to roam?

Thanks, goober

As far as CDMA 850/1900 MHz goes which the Motorola SLVR L7c operates on, you will not be able to use the handset outside North America because I don't believe there are any countries outside North America that deploy these 2 bands. With GSM, there are 4 major frequencies used by various wireless carriers. Outside North America, the 2 major GSM frequencies are 900/1800 MHz while North America uses 850/1900 MHz. The best way to describe CDMA and GSM without getting hardcore techno on you is they're both fruit with different flavors.

If you plan on travelling frequently outside North America, you may wish trying to find a GSM/CDMA handset like the Samsung A790 which will work on the North American CDMA networks and the GSM ones overseas. Even though Sprint Nextel Inc. has discontinued this particular handset, some corporate retail stores still have them in stock as well as you can try eBay.

So, could I roam/call in Canada? Because I used to live there and just moved, and would really like to call or have service there or whatever.

Any of the Sprint CDMA handsets currently sold will work in Canada calling as well as travelling to the Great North. Roaming charges would apply for making/receiving call from there as well as international long distance charges. From the US, you would incur international long distance charges to call Canada plus applicable air time.

yes cdma does work in canada, you will want to go with sprint though if you goto canada a lot. for 7$ a month you get LD to canada at .07$ a min in addition to that if you have the canada roam option it is only .35$ a min to roam in canada. and soon you will alaso be able to use EVDEo in many parts of canada. I travel to canada about 6 times a year and my sprint phone works awsome there.

in terms of cdma roaming. there are several counteries where it can be used. see the link below.

i do 100% agree with you that cdma is the superior than gsm but i personally like gsm better i like the voice quality on gsm it sounds clear, and natural(as far as voice) to me and its more flexible and i support flexible standards, but i really dont care about the whole gsm vs. cdma thing it all depends on personal preference

and about the sim card thing, if someone does steal my phone, its true they can take their sim card and put it in the phone and use it but gsm phones have an IMEI number, i can call cingular and tell them to block that IMEI number and regardless if the they put their sim card in the phone, the phone is blacklisted and if someone puts their sim card in the phone and powers it on, the phone will not work, it works j...
