4th Generation

I'm down here in South Texas, and I found out through one of Sprint's "big wigs" that 4th generation will not be lanched till 2009. Not too sure if it's early, mid, or late 2009. I know there's alot of bugs with the Hybrib phones. iDen works great, but it's the CDMA side of the Hybrid phone that isn't working right. I know Sprint just merged with Nextel Partners ( Rio Grande Valley, Tx. ). Hopefully Sprint will get everything straight.

You have to remember the Hybrid phones for voice as well as data access are single band PCS(1900 MHz) CDMA. With this being said, the current Hybrid phones only work on the Sprint CDMA network and where Sprint has roaming agreements with other 1900 MHz CDMA wireless carriers. The only benefit of the NPI acquisition in your market if you have a Hybrid phone is you'll have more iDEN network where you can use the PTT. I would like to think Motorola will one day release a Hybrid phone with dual band(1900/850 CDMA) capabilities which would allow customers to roam on wireless carriers that use the lower CDMA band like Alltel Wireless and Verizon Wireless if a 1900 MHz CDMA network isn't available.
As far as WiMax(4G) is concerned, that network is...

Well the point of this device is chances are they have overlapped many areas with CDMA infrastructure on the IDEN towers, which will allow for more people to use Sprint’s voice but if they want that DC functionality they should get the device, but if the Sprint’s voice isn’t good in the area then simply don’t get this device and wait till next year when the majority of those towers will be co-located. Yea, I don’t like the idea of a dual band 800/1.9ghz because it will use up a lot more battery and perhaps not be that great reception wise especially with those 2 radios and then the DC radio. I mean the I930 had problems even if there were GSM and IDEN radios in there so it will be complicated. Motorola was in charge of making that I930.

how is it so that if a phone has a gsm and iden chip there could be problems(receptionwise or other) or cdma/iden(1.9ghz/850mhz, iden800) are you saying those different technologies and the chipsets counteract each other? in that case HSDPA/GSM phones would be problematic, im curious

Yes, there are many issues when combing the technologies and frequencies as evident by the I930, which was IDEN/GSM, based. The point of the dual mode devices is to make it easier and with out having any problems functionality wise. Keep it simple and there will be no problems. If you start adding in all the radios and other frequencies chances are there will be problems, especially with coverage and with battery life.

There have been several succesful models of phones that had dual technology in several bands. Such as Cingulars GAIT phones, that were AMPS/TDMA/GSM

Fourth generation as in Wimax will be on schedule and please stop sending this nonsense throughout this forum.

I have tested the IC502, I have found no bugs whatsoever, and it worked perfectly. Since Nextel’s voice is not that great in my area, while Sprint was, it is the perfect device for that kind of functionality. Voice and 1xrtt for CDMA and PTT on the IDEN network. This will definitely free up a lot of capacity on the Nextel network if many customers were to purchase this and so far, these devices are selling. The IC902 will sell a lot better.

Nextel18, you mentioned the IC902 would sport EVDO. Is this true? I have a nextel work phone and a sprint personal phone. I would love to combine the two. Thanks

Nextel18, I am getting my information from reliable source. I will remind you in 2009 when it's been pushed back. I'm not making this up for personal gain. I feel everyone should know what I've found out through reliable sources within Sprint. The day I posted "4th Generation", that was the day a Hybrid phone was being tested in Rio Grande Valley, Texas. We were contacted via iDen that the CDMA part of the Hybrid phone had "bugs", the phone was picking up other networks (roaming). I wouldn't be surprised if your Jon from SEBU.
