no roaming service in atlanta with nokia 6255i
I have a Nokia 6255i with MetroPCS that I purchased about 3 months ago. My home coverage area is south Florida from Port Charlotte to Marco Island on the west coast, from Key West to Vero Beach on the east coast.
Yesterday I was passing thru Atlanta Hartsfield airport and my phone was set to "Automatic Roaming" rather than MetroPCS only. The Nokia 6255i determined that there was a MetroPCS service site available and synced with it. Lo and behold when I tried to make a call it was disconnected 2 seconds after I pressed SEND.
It seems that if you are out of your home coverage area (Atlanta/Athens, San Francisco/Sacramento, South Florida) and in another MetroPCS area, your phone will NOT work even when attempting roaming.
The software allows two choices, MetroPCS only or roaming if MetroPCS not available. If MetroPCS is available that is the network that it chooses, in spite of the fact that that local MetroPCS network will treat you as an intruder and disconnect you.
So in a nutshell with current network programming a MetroPCS phone has absolutely NO roaming capability when in another MetroPCS coverage area. Not good, and I'm not happy.
A call to customer service elicited the response of "and your point is?". They say it is not their fault (funny I thought it was their network and their phone), and no that information is not on the web.
The $45/month for unlimited use and long distance is great, but not with this customer service attitude.
I currently have a verizon wireless plan (450 minutes/$40/month). If I add the $45/month MetroPCS cost to the $40/month verizon wireless cost, I could have 1,350 minutes/month for $80. My current non-metropcs usage is 245 minutes/month.
Food for thought, as we all have to make decisions which company for our service, and which plan works best for us. I'll give MetroPCS another 3 months before deciding if this year-and-half experiment really produced any benefit.

every company has its downfalls. I'm not being harsh, but what do you expect when you pay $45 a month for unlimited local calling with a very tiny company like Metro PCS. Keyword there is "Local" and the plan specifically states you will get only local calling and not roaming. Unfortunately, there was an assumption made and you became upset by it.

Au contraire pierre. My intent was to use the Nokia 6255i in credit card roaming, not MetroPCS Atlanta market area roaming. My disagreement was the fact that I could not even make a credit card outgoing call. Which is exactly what I am supposed to be able to do.
I noticed that MetroPCS service is now available in the Tampa/St. Petersburg/Sarasota market now. Coverage (at least depicted by their map) is from Brooksville south all the way to Marco Island now. About 227 miles of continuous coverage. On the east coast the coverage is from Sebastian to Key West, about 312 miles of continuous coverage.
I noticed that MetroPCS service is now available in the Tampa/St. Petersburg/Sarasota market now. Coverage (at least depicted by their map) is from Brooksville south all the way to Marco Island now. The cell sites the phone picks up is determined by the PRL(roaming list) on the handset. It is a local service, therefore when you are out of the "local" area, even if you want to make a credit card call, you will not be able to. Because the phone does not see a site that will accept it's call.
I don't know how much you travel out of your local area. But your best bet is to put something like Alltel pre-pay on NAM2, and your Metro service stays on NAM1. When you travel, just switch to NAM2 and you will have service outside of that area(on a different mobile number of course). If you don't travel much, and are satisfied with Metro service, then this is a very economical and viable solution. As long as you can get an Alltel tech that ...
