For some who do not know what EV DO stands for it is EVolution Data Only. Wireless has sort of grown by generations 1st Generation (staticy cellular), 2nd Gen (the original digital phone), 3rd Generation was the 1XRTT or higher capacity networks. This meant greater voice call capacity (fewer dropped calls for customers and less hardware for carriers).

The next step or 4th Generation had a couple of options one was increase the speed of data ONLY on the network or go one step further and increase voice capacity and data speeds. EVDO is the faster data speed only option. Voice capacity remains the same. Most carriers skipped this step except Verizon.

Next will be Wide Band CDMA or CDMA2000. If I remember correctly this is the next s...

1XRTT was actually not full 3G and is often referred to as 2.5G and sometimes 2.75G. CDMA2000 refers to 1XRTT (sometimes known as 3G1X). EVDO is the 3G technology and only increases data speeds.

The next step for GSM networks after EDGE is WCDMA, which is a 3G technology (GPRS -> EDGE -> WCDMA). It is actually GSM borrowing a CDMA air interface instead of using a TDMA air interface. CDMA and GSM networks will not converge on WCDMA, as they are both 3G technologies already being implemented. I feel that the confusion comes from the fact that WCDMA is a misleading term to some people.

Like I said..it had been a while and I no longer carry my Newtons Telecom Dictionary 😁 Thanks for the update.

Although you might guess i still like the techie stuff and wish USCC had a little more of it on their network. There is so much that can be done and I think USC is starting to fall behind. Hope I am wrong in the next series of handset releases.

Maybe it is just my understanding of easy edge (or the pricing structure) but I just don't see the applications that would appeal to me.

Again, just my humble 2 cents.
