Is CellularOne the only carrier in the UP (as in Watersmeet) and Norther Wisconsin? (as in Eagle River) Is their service now GSM, or is a dual band phone necessary?

Dobson Cellone owns and operaters in that area. All upper WI, MN, MI and UP MI. There is Tdma service but all new cell sites are gsm. requires a tri band gsm phone

alltel has coverage in the up as well, you would want a tri-mode phone as there is still a great deal of analog there

I used to have an Alltel phone, and trust me: Alltel does NOT work in the Watersmeet area! (I'm from Wakefield, near Ironwood) Cellular One is the best provider. Cellular One has a few select area still using older analog technology, but most areas, and the U.P. included, GSM digital tri-band phones are necessary.
