This might be a crazy idea....
I know that this is pretty farfetched and many years away, but do you think that with all these companies joining forces, and the introduction of GSM in the midwest, it's possible that cell one and verizon might join forces. As for South Dakota, they use many of the same towers and practically are the same.

It'll never happen.
Not with a merger with Alltel on the horizon.

I think Verizon will definitely try to make offers to purchase Alltel in the distant future.

Actually it might not be as distant as you might think. My sources have told me that after the dust settles from the ALLTEL?Western Wireless acquisition and the divested AT&T Wireless acquisition (all finished by Q3 2005 projected), Verizon may enter negotiations for a purchase. Now a purchase of that size and scope wouldn't take place very quickly, you'd probably see a year or more on that one once talks begin!

I heard that Alltel will not sell to Verizon. They are talking about continuing to merge with smaller companies to compete with the big national carriers.

Alltel might get bought out by Verizon but it would be a hostile takeover. I also have a hard time believing the DOJ, FCC, FTC and SEC would approve a merger of that size.

My theory on this is that one day all of the CDMA carriers will be one big company and all of the GSM carries will be another company. Then the competition between service providers will be reduced to which technology do you like better. Me personally, I'm a CDMA girl all the way. All of my parents have GSM and I don't like their coverage or the number of dropped calls. Also, it is harder for them to get service when in rural areas, where I have no problems. I'm in Kansas and the Alltel thing hasn't been approved yet, or in Nebraska. Maybe we'll be bought by Verizon??? 😁

I'm all for mergers and such. Gives companies more buying power with the manufacturers. Take Cingular. They are almost the Wal-Mart of wireless. They asked Motorola for a new cutting edge phone and got it, the RAZR V3. Anyone else have it? Nope. At least not yet. Exclusive contract going on for a while, not sure how long. With the Alltel merger, I hope we get an exclusive model nobody else has.
BUT, where does it end? We can't end up with one or two large companies running the show across the country. That's why minutes on current plans are inching up, or current prices are inching down. To keep customers from going somewhere else. What'll happen if there's just 2 big companies?
P.S. My first cell phone when I turned 18 back in 2001 wa...
