OK, Can someone explain how the data plans work through Verizon. I was orginally looking at purchasing a Sidekick II (A friend has the original and does not have to pay extra for data) Verizon wants me to pay an extra $40 a month for data access through the Treo???

Is Verizon that much more expensive for internet access?

The Verizon data access may cost a little more but their coverage is vastly greater than TMo's.

The Sidekick is designed for the general consumer user, not the business user.

The reason the Treo needs a data plan is because it automatically pings to a server every couple of seconds. If the data feature is not on the acct then it will use up airtime; i've seen outragously high bills because this feature wasn't on the account. If you don't want the feature then you can opt to delete the enhanced services feature which will disable all data functions.

It's either or, the pinging feature can't be turned off.
