It's funny this comes up every 2 months. Engadgetmobile has alot of rumors... but no source other then HTC KID said it... I wouldn't doubt VZW has thought about it but was a bid placed?

Alltel sale could fetch $30 billion
The top rural U.S. wireless provider fueled merger speculation during its earnings call Tuesday.
February 20 2007: 9:56 PM EST

NEW YORK/PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) -- Alltel Corp. could fetch a price tag of $25 billion to $31 billion from private equity firms or other U.S. mobile service providers looking to expand in rural markets, analysts said Tuesday.

Alltel, the top rural U.S. wireless provider, fueled merger speculation when it said during an earnings conference call Tuesday that it was reviewing its strategic options. Analysts said a sale agreement could happen as early as April.

Its shares rose 3.3 percent to $62.40 after the comments, also spurred by better-than-expected quarterly results.

Is Alltel Wireless publicly traded stock? If so, how would that work with VZW since it isn't publicly traded... would you just get cash back for your shares or would VZW have to keep those people as shareholders or what?

Alltel is positioning themselves for a sale, but when they first did it and announced it, nobody bit. At least not publicly. Verizon is the most logical buyer, but may not be in the market. It would vault them over Cingy, and therefore would be hyper motivating for them. So maybe, maybe not!
