Verizon broadband - Express card

I'll try to explain this as simply as possible, bear with me.

I have a new Dell and bought the verizon express card for wireless access (we already had 4 other phones, 2 Razrs, 1 chocolate & an LG so this made the 5th line).

I wanted to be able to share the card with my other laptop but no matter how I've configured it, it will not recognize the card. I DO NOT want to have to buy another card and pay an additional $60 a month. I've looked into a wireless router but the only one I find is for a PC wireless card.

Anyone have any solutions. This didn't solve all my problems since we are still 'fighting' over using one internet connection.

Guess I shoulda got the PC card after all but thought I'd stick with the newest technolo...

not sure about sharing between two laptops, but have you seen the USB720 modem? it just sticks in any usb port; that may be more "share" able. then again, it may not.

Yes I have and that wasn't an option when I got my express card in early January. Since I'm stuck with this one I need to figure out if there is an alternative.

We just got Verizon broadband access mid December ;)

If you bought a new Dell (i did recently too) It more then likely has Wi-Fi in it, then all you need to do is get a wireless router then it will pick up the signal, if your looking to take the computer out of the house then this wont help

A router is going to make the difference with networking the computers through their Wi-fi peer to peer already didn't? Would that not be the same thing but adding another component?

I don't know REALLY but don't want to get a wireless router and then it not work if I'm just missing something here.

I looked at getting a wireless router the Verizon card went into because I thought that MIGHT make a difference but the only one I find is for a PC card and not an express card.

My take on it is it shouldn't matter what laptop you have it in, the ESN is in the aircard...you just have to have the right software to access the aircard. I remamber reding something about Dell's and aircards, but don't remember what. I would suggets calling Care and get Data Support to help.

So if I install the software on the old laptap that came with the aircard then my OLD laptop should then recognize the shared aircard from the new laptop?

hmmmm never thought about that it's worth a try.

I don't much think Dell is gonna help me get my old Gateway laptop access.

No, you can use the aircard in only 1 computer at a time, but you should be able to move it from computer to computer as long as the software is loaded in to both computers.

But by doing this you will only be able to be online with one at a time.

Won't work one the aircard is the express card for the new laptop and the old laptop takes the PCMCIA card slot.

they sell an adapter to convert the express card to fit into the older pcmcia slot. I think its around 39.99 and can be ordered from Verizon. Most stores don't stock it normally, but you never know.

Alright, lets clear the waters a bit. You have two laptops, both with express card slots. You have one laptop that currently uses the express card but you would like to physically move the card to the other laptop and use it there, as well?

Or, do you wish to use the one express card as a means to provide internet access to both laptops at the same time?

Three, are you running windows vista?

Answer those questions and we can begin to solve the problem.

Primarily at home.

If I take it on the road I can either take the OLD laptop and take my chances connecting at a hotspot or the new laptop and take my access with me via the Verizon express card.

1. Yes I have 2 laptops, one with an express card slot (the new one) and the other with the old PC card slot. I want to be able to get on the internet with both computers at sometimes the same time.

2. YES ;)

Ok. You have a few options, probably none of them very elegant.

Option 1- You share the internet connection via the network connections tab on your laptop. This will require creating some sort of local area network between your two laptops. This can be done via a wired switch or an ad hoc wireless(802.11 a/b/g) network. I have not personally done it via the second one, so your mileage may vary.

Option 2- You grab yourself another air card and cry silently to yourself.

Option 3- Forget the aircard but continue crying.

Option 4- You may be able to use a wireless router in place of the ad hoc network, but something in my memory seems to think that the windows connection sharing won't let it work very well, if at all.

I actually have my computers already networked and they recognize each other. (peer to peer network with new laptop being the host)

I won't grab another aircard there must be a way it just doesn't make sense otherwise.

I figured Vista was going to be a problem so I don't plan to install it at the present time. Wait for all the bugs and revisions to come out LOL

Then you are pretty much most of the way there. I'm doing this from memory so don't take it as complete gospel.

Under the Network connections folder, right click on your Verizon express card and choose properties. I think the option we want is on the second tab, but it might be the first. Anyway, there is an otion to share this connection with other computers, or something similarly worded. Click that. It effectively turns your host computer into a mini router that will share your connection with other systems on the lan.

Yep that's exactly what I did, numerous times LOL but for some reason the old computer isn't picking up any of it even though it (old computer) shows it's on the "blahblah" network.

When I've done this before with router based networks it's always shown shared folders/shared connections.

I'm gonna try it again this weekend. I spent 8 hours plus another 5 hours doing this same thing over and over again. Maybe I missed something.

1 -Did you setup your peer to peer network before sharing the internet connection?

2 -If so, how did you set it up? Assigned ip addresses, or simple file sharing via windows workgroup name?

3 -If you did the it via assigned addresses, choose obtain address automatically and make sure nothing is hard coded in the dns as well. Reboot systems, with the main coming on first.

4 -Otherwise, I'll have to think about it for awhile.

1. No, I set up the host computer and told it to share it's internet connection then set up the old computer.

2. I did not assign IP addresses, just told the host computer to share the internet connection. Ya know it shows that it is coz the hand symbol is there. But not showing up on the old laptop.

Hmmm. So far so good, too bad it's not going right.

Let see:

What ip address is the old computer reporting? It should be reporting something in the 192.x.x.x range. If it is doing 169.x.x.x then we know it isn't even paying attention.

Workgroup name, are they the same for both systems?
