Can this be done?

Currently I have service with Alltel but my contract will be ending soon.
Verizon is not offered in my area but the phone I really like is the LG 6000 which is a Verizon phone. Alltel has the LG 5550 which reminds me of the 6000 but I understand that you cannot assign ringtones for callers in your phone book & you cannot transfer pictures from your computer to the 5550. I do not like the outside of the LG 5450 because it is not as nice as the 6000 & 5550.
So my question is this.
Can I sign up for Verizon service in a neighboring town since you can keep your same number these days? That way everyone where I live will not have to dial a long distance number to reach me. I know Verizon has great coverage where I live because my son has Veri...

What city and state do you live in? I am curious to know why we wouldn't offer service in an area yet have good coverage.

If you live on the extended network I advise not signing up primarly because there is going to be a lack in service even if you're on a no roaming plan. If you sign up in the neighboring town you will be asked for your home address, if its in an extended network the sales rep will not open up an acct for you.

I live in Pikeville, NC which is just 8 miles from Goldsboro, NC where all of our cell phone companies are.
The next closest town is Wilson. Then Selma/Smithfield are next with Mt. Olive & Kinston after those. Raleigh, NC is 50 miles from me.
I understand they would not sign me up with my address but I could always get one of those mailbox forwarding places if need be. LOL
Guess I want too much. I don't really care or need a camera phone but I love the way the outside of the LG 6000 phone looks. I also want a phone that I can assign ringtones for the callers & I want to be able to put pictures on the phone from my computer.
Call me crazy I guess.
Thanks for responding. *Ü*

You are not going to be able to send or receive pix and/or txt msgs when in pikeville. I as well as VZW don't reccomend starting service, but we can't stop you. Don't call in complaing about lack of coverage when you're in pikeville.

Not being able to send & receive text or pics is no problem because I do not want to do those things.
I want a good phone that has color & able to change the picture when I am tired of the what's there. I want to be able to put my own pictures in the phone & assign ringtones for callers.
I currently have a Motorola T720 which sucks because of the icons in the middle of the screen. What good are wall papers when you can't see them because of the stupid icons.
I would not even consider changing cell phone providers is Alltel had some decent phones. Cingular has some cool phones but there coverage stinks. You have to be on an interstate to get a signal with them.
Thanks for your help.
