Ok,
I know this might sound like a weird questions...but I was wondering if you have to get the unlimited data plan with a blackberry? I really just want a reliable smart phone that has great reception and the 8703 seems to do just that. The email would be nice, but not totally necessary for me at this point. If verizon is going to make me get that $45 data plan than I may have to pass up this phone.
Thanks for your help

no...you can do pay as u go or the $24.99 (10mb) plan...
1.5 cents per KB if you do the pay as u go...
...
ok...how positive are you, cause I just called my local store and they said they couldnt even activate it without the data plan. I kinda wanted to see what you guys had to say on pscoop.

thats not what i have been told and ran in to. its stated that RIM and Verizon have a contract that state each blackberry devive must be activated with a data plan of some sort and that doesnt mean pay as you go. palm and pocket pc are not this way.

BINGO! The only correct answer so far! THANK YOU!
...
I'll second that. A Blackberry must have either the 10 Meg or unlimited data plan. Other PDA's can have pay as you go but not a Blackberry.
...
to make someone else look like an ass you just made a bigger one of your self! I hope you are not employee! If so, PLEASE ask if you can go back through PDA / BB data plan training!
A blackberry MUST have a data plan, does not have to be the unlimited, but does have a MB plan! Contract between VZW and RIM for all devices and no you can not get around it!
...
Absolutely sure...
I do them all the time because people are not sure they are going to the email or internet functions...they just want two devices for their calendar and contact list...
...
#3 wrong,..Sorry, no you dont do it all the time! The second an ESN change (or new ad) is done to any BB device DMD pops the ESN audit and will not allow anything else to go through until you select some level of a data plan. And if your going to say you just add it and then remove afterwards, dont! The audit runs in reverse as well, if you try to pull a data plan while a BB device is on an acct your only option is to pull the plan and the device! (sound of bubble bursting goes here)
...
My VZW rep says any PDA's without data plans will be canceled and I'll get a chargeback (I'm indirect). This applies to most indirects, but corporate should be able to set you up with pay as you go data.
...
not all PDA's...just BBs.
...
A Blackberry MUST have a data plan, either 24.99 10 megs or 44.99 unlimited. There is no pay as go option with a blackberry, only pda/smartphones.
The Verizon M&P states this as well, min 24.99 10 megs as licensed for blackberry service.
...
this is correct. Glad someone got it right finally

actually here is the correct info from the buisness guides. IMPORTANT! Data access is always available on PDA/smartphone devices. If you do not subscribe to either a data plan or data feature, data usage will be billed at 1.5 cents per KB($15.36 per MB), which does not include Wireless Sync. Wireless Sync may be purchased separately for a $5 monthly access fee. A Data Plan or Data Feature is always required to use a BlackBerry device.
...
It really depends on your internet useage.
...
Well Im willing to get a data plan....I just dont want the $45 dollar one. I am willing to give up the email. All I want is an decent calendar, qwerty, good reception, and a good speakerphone. This is one of the few phones that has it all

NOPE! use it 101 times a month or not at all....you still MUST have a plan!

what if you put a national access block on it?
...
that would only apply to a PDA or Smartphone. contract with RIM is that every BB device must has a data plan of some level! If not there are chargeback's, fines/fees, and impacts on the overall license

unfortunately since blackberries are designed to handle massive email load, they much leave the store with the unlimited blackberry data package, they will not work without it.

Chris,
I am sorry man. You need at least the $24.99 plan. I just tried to do an ESN change on my line with the BB I have here in my store. I have done it before with the pay as you go but that may have been a while ago before a bunch of these eROES updates..
...
fair enough...the consensus seems to be that you need at least the 24.99 plan. Thanks for the info!

Don't listen to 'em. There is currently no pay per kb feature available with a blackberry. The phone won't allow the pay as you go feature to be added.

I am a day late and a dollar short...but here it goes...
As CORRECTLY stated a blackberry device MUST have some sort of data plan. This is the same for Nextel also (we sell both Nextel and VZW). The reason is not because of some "contract", it is because of how the device works. The device sends a packet of data to the server to check for new emails. There is no way around this. This is just how a BB device works. A Palm PDA on the other hand uses the wireless sync server that vzw has (although it is powered through a third party company). So, if you do not set up a Palm/XV6700/Q (non BB) up on the wireless sync and do not attempt to access the net, you are not billed any kb charges. In fact, I have in email that they are no longer ...

No,
That makes a lot of sense, thanks for the input!
