My 2-year contract is up for renewal in about 6 months (I now know to only buy a one-year contract), and I have begun to look at possible providers and phones again. I have the VX-8100, and I am surprised to see that not much has changed: camera quality has not increased; EVDO rev. A is not yet really deployed; music capabilities are still limited, and with the same clunky interface; etc. Between 4 years ago and 2 years ago, there were many changes: calls became digital; music, cameras and multimedia was introduced; color screens became standard.
Happily, the phones still make calls, but what has really changed or improved in 2 years?

VCast TV!!!
Also, the EnV and Samsung 990 have higher powered cameras. Many of the features haven't changed, it's just that they've become available on a greater variety of phones.

god, you must really love that phone! The font and screen are two small for me...but to each his own.

I will say if you have to ask that then you really don't know what your talking about. Picture quality has greatly improved. You can get a 2.0 mp phone. 2 yrs ago it was vga at best. All the other stuff you mentioned changes from carrier to carrier. EVDO is widely deployed and getting there. You can play music on a cell phone. Use it as a mass storage. Hold gigs of stuff. Back when I got my first phone it held maybe 16 vga pics. Now my phone can hold 1000's.
Just because you don't see it deosn't mean its not big improvments. In my grandmothers years she has seen the invention of electricity all the way to space traval. So if I went with you thinkning what has really changed in my 31 yrs??
...
Thanks for your replies. As I said, I have the VX-8100 which has a 1.3MP camera, music, etc. That's why I was asking; it seems the only real improvement is VCAST TV which was two weeks ago.

Agreed.
What has changed? Certainly not the poor phone selection. Verizon needs to keep up with its GSM competitors and debut new, sexier phones. Look at the new Samsung t629 for T-Mobile... its a sexy, silver little slider with all the bells and whistles... I feel that Verizon's phones are all utility and no style. I'm seriously considering switching service because of it.
...
On a side note, why do people describe phones as sexy? I've never found anything sexy about a phone, aside from maybe the vibrate feature... I just don't get it. ๐คจ

If you haven't found a phone sexy, then you haven't seen my wallpaper...

Sexy phones do exists.

You may want to consider what works in your area. Obviously VzW is working your area. Look at your options and see what's best for YOU. Who do your mobile to mobile minutes go to, what plans are suitable for you, what kind of technology is based in your area, devices, company discounts, etc. If your basing your judgment on features, I believe Sprint is more promising. T Mobile hasn't deployed 3rd generation (needs to play catch up), Cingular has a very patchy network, VzW is GREAT, but their plans and UI hasn't changed. I'm not n here to start or pick a fight, but Sprint's plans offer more, ALOT more. J2ME MAY be a plus, if you hate BREW. Pick what WORKS. ๐

I think a lot has changed in the less than two years since the 8100 was released (July 2005). While not everybody uses all of them, they are all new and may have value to some.
Direct to handset music downloading, location based services such as chaperone or field force manager, and VZ navigator.
In my opinion, navigation on my phone is the best non voice feature that has been added since text messaging.
Exactly what were you wanting or expecting?

I hear what he is saying changes that don't require more money to the bill. Like when i had some motorola no color screen non vz interface then got the 8100 i was blown away. I like the flash stuff now on the phones if only they weren't so gay. Thats the bread and butter customize flash animation.
