Why on all Verizon phones they still use a retractable Antenna? Does have anything to do with them still using AMPS?

I'll let someone else comment on AMPS, not feeling confident in my answer. However, you will almost never have to pull out that antenna unless you're right in the middle of an extra-large Super Wal-Mart (and even then, good luck). The gain on the two antenna positions are nominal at best, in most areas. To get an even better signal, you'd probably have to create your own yagi antenna and hook it up to your cell and find your best signal with the signal strength meter.

I actually have a better answer for ya. VERIZON DOES HAVE phones with STUB antennas.
LG7000, LG 6000, LG 3200, Motorola V60S, Kyocera 414...to name a few.
And it has nothing to do with AMPS if it has retractable or not. Take the 720 phone. Cingular had one with a stub. Verizon had one with a retractable. Just depends on how the manufacturer decided to make the phone. And pulling the antenna helps the signal to go up just under half a bar.

Actually, I have been told that Verizon is somewhat stubborn about insisting on retractable antennas from the manufacturer, but that does not explain why some of the newer phones don't have them anyway.

I always pull my antenna out, i think it looks cool, besides it helps to get the best signal no matter where I am. I wish they would'nt stop releasing phones with a stub, look at the T720 Cingular or ATT had, it looks stupid!

I agree, I want the option to extend the antenna. It's worth a whole bar of reception in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Don't extend it if this bothers you. You can then someday retire a old phone with a new un used antenna. 🤣

I guess what I was trying to get to is why specifically they still use it. I know it helps a little with reception, but why? Is it Verizon, Qualcom (b/c most Verizon phones are 'Digital from Qualcom') or the manufactures who determain it. From a tech point, what does it actually do for the phone?
