question about contracts, HELP!!

Ok.. this is my question(s)... I currently have a 2-year contract with Verizon (under my sisters' name) that is supposed to end in a few weeks

Now, I went into a local cell phone store and I wanted to sign a new contract to get better phones for cheaper (or even free) (contract will now be under my name)

However, he said that we CANNOT keep the same phone numbers... is this true? That is one of the dumbest things I've heard... because he said I can keep the numbers if I switch from Verizon to another carrier but not if I go from Verizon contract to Verizon contract

So, I went online to Vzw.com and there's an "upgrade phone" option... and I think with this option I can keep the same numbers... However I think I end up paying like ...

YOu may have gone to a third party agent that just wanted to "churn" you so that they could get the new activations because as the account stands right now they can't do anything for you unless she has you listed as a Full Access Contact.

If you go to a corporate store you should not have these issues. Plus the pricing normally is not that different when you go to a 3rd party when it is an upgrade.

these issues meaning... I can keep the same phone numbers with a new contract and get better phones for free or cheap?

also... another question, within a family plan... can the 2 phones assigned to 2 different numbers be switched?
for example, Samsung with 123-4567 and LG with 123-9876 to have their phone numbers switched?

Okay... you can upgrade there... Pricing varies depending on phone, plan and market. And yes, they just change the ESN, your best bet is to have to phones with you though. just makes things easier.

is upgrading at the verizon store itself the same in $$ as doing it on vzw.com? or even cheaper due to no shipping charges?

online is generally going to be cheaper. You get an instant discount instead of a mail in rebate. The stores charge an upgrade processing fee also.

Plus, there are online only discount available at times.

You can sometimes go to the store and whine until they batch the price, but they may just tell you to do it online and go for the easier sell next inline...

It's called an Assumption of Liability (aol for short).

Have your sister call customer service and you can have the service transfered into your name if they won't do it at the store.

Was this a direct store or an indirect agent. I've noticed that sometimes indirect agents don't want to do AOL's and instead push for new lines, I'm guessing so they get a higher commission...

Yeah, what he said...

Upgrade the handsets first...either on line or in the store, whichever is more beneficial for you. BUT UPGRADE THE EQUIPMENT FIRST!

Next do the AOL. Basically, it relieves your sister of the obligation for the contract and makes you responsible.

No activation fees involved since the account is already active.

I did exactly as you have described. I'm not sure if it was just the store I went to, but I did everything at once. I just told them (pretty much what you have said) and they did it all at once... change name, new contract, and switch phones/numbers.
