Help! Which New Phone to Buy

Masquerade

Oct 12, 2004, 2:34 AM
I'm about to hit my NE2 and I currently have a Samsung SCH-a310 which gets NO service in my apartment due to thick brick walls. So I am looking to get a new phone with great reception. I have no need for a camera. If phones in general will never work in my apartment then I'm looking for an alternate solution or just a cheap phone.

My thoughts were...
Motorola v710 - Only reason is because I could leave the phone near a window and talk with a headset. Downfall is all the bad publicity its been getting, its large size, the headset's price.

Samsung SCH-a530 - I liked my previous samsung a lot and I like the size of this phone. It is only bi-mode but if I'm never gonna get good signal in my apartment I might as well get something thats ...

The a530 is a discontinued model, I would get the V710. I've also heard a couple people who have bought radio frequency reception modules(I think they might of picked it up from a CB radio store) which increases the signal strength in your home.

Can't speak to the v710 since I've never used one (though its getting mixed user reviews on this site). The Samsung 530 though IS a phone I own and I really like it... it seems to be something of a reception champ for me 🙂

However, it was recently discontinued, so don't expect to find one at a Verizon Store. If you really want one, you'll have to phone around to several 3rd party agents. In the SF/SJ/Oakland Bay Area, I had good luck with both the Voice Wireless and Cellular Image chains... VW gave me the phone for $60+tx on a 1-yr contract, waaay better than anyone else.

However, it does not have a camera. Not a deal breaker at all for me, but it might be for you.

I anything the motorola V710 would be the better choice of the two.

Like the samsung a530 it retains tri-mode. (Two digital, one analog signal) The camera is top notch. The sound quality and the speakerphone are awesome. This phone blows my lg-vx4400 signal away.

Oh if wireless signal in your apartment is bad check this website out.

Look up the "ACS Wireless Signal Repeater".

Keep in mind that wireless phones were never intended to work inside buildings. Unfortunately your brick constructed building may have more steel in its framework than anything else. That will interfere with the signal.
