NEW YORK (AP) -- Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel Corp. are introducing a BlackBerry e-mail phone that's compatible with the cellular technology more common in other countries in addition to the standard used on their own U.S. networks.

One key difference between the Verizon and Sprint versions of the new BlackBerry 8830 is that Sprint's will be ''unlocked,'' enabling customers who take the device abroad to buy wireless service in other countries through other carriers. Verizon's 8830 is locked so that it can only be used overseas through Verizon's roaming service.

vzw already has a moto,samsung and samsung i830 that can be used overseas only for gsm side.but in states is still cdma use only.

Question: Is there any way to know whether Sprint's UNLOCKED GSM can be used (whether intended to or not) on GSM towers in the US?

no it won't work on any US gsm towers

Does it work on a different freq? Granted, I have a nextel now, but since I moved to NH, I've been hearing not-too-impressive comments about Verizon's coverage, and most places I have no service, someone's T-Mobile or Stinkular will work....
