ATT/Cingular Wireless Growth Falls Short

Only 1.2 million net adds?? Talk about falling off a cliff from last quarter. Anyone think VZW is going to have any trouble beating that by at least a half-million? 😳

At least ATT/Cingy's churn continues to improve, though slowly.

AT&T’s wireless growth falls short, but financials remain strong

Story posted: April 24, 2007 - 1:06 pm EDT

AT&T Inc.’s wireless division, Cingular Wireless, posted mixed first quarter results with customer growth coming in below expectations but churn and average revenue per user exceeding forecasts.

The country’s largest wireless carrier said it added just shy of 1.2 million customers during the quarter, which was an 18-percent jump compared with the first quarter of 2006 but short of

That's going a bit far. ATT/Cing may have had a disappointing quarter adds-wise, but they'd have to implode to do as bad as Sprint. 😳

Analysts were expecting stronger customer growth from AT&T as smaller rival Sprint Nextel Corp. has been hemorrhaging customers over the past several quarters. Some claimed AT&T’s inability to gain those customers shows it is losing market share to Verizon Wireless.

That's the paragraph I found most interesting. When does Verizon report its quarter results?

Yea, I am a little disappointed with their results, which would bode well for T-mobile USA, possibly Sprint, and definitely Verizon Wireless. My estimates for Verizon Wireless are 1.8 million subscribers for quarter 1 2007 as they continue to show their strength in the wireless industry.

I think it's a little early to tell here. The 1st quarter is usually a slow quarter for Wireless and the rest of the major players could post similar results.
The positive is that Cingular has rebounded in Postpaid customers and lowered churn. I am very curious to see what Sprintel churn looks like as well as their numbers.

1st Quarter 2007
Cingular= 1.2 million
Verizon= did not report yet but my estimates 1.8 million.

1st quarter 2006
Cingular= 1.7 million.
Verizon= 1.7 million

1st quarter 2005
Cingular= 1.4 million.
Verizon= 1.64 million

It is a slower quarter but for Cingular and Verizon Wireless, it should not have been a slower quarter. Look at the past results for the 2 companies from 1st quarter 2006 and 1st quarter 2005. You can see that 2006 numbers improved from 2005. I was thinking the same thing for Cingular in 2007 of the first quarter; however, as mentioned before I was disappointed. I do agree with your point that they improved their postpaid which I think is key to growth, but 1.2 million vs. 1.7 million a year ago perio...

Not supposed to happen? Is there a wireless guideline saying so? Could we be seeing a slowdown due to market saturation yet? I think that we really need to see what the rest of the industry is doing before we gage what Cingular did. My bet is on VZW leading the pack, but it could be a rough quarter for all in the industry.
Are you going to hide again when Sprint gets it's butt kicked and be nowhere to be found, what happened last quarter, were you preaching in a third world country with no internet access???

Yes, it isn’t supposed to happen especially since T-mobile and Sprint are struggling and even though this market is reaching saturation limits they could still steal customers from those companies mentioned above. Especially looking at trends from 2005 to 2006, one would expect that there would be some growth and not a 500k or so decline from 2006 to 2007 customer growth. In addition, Cingular would be benefiting from their HSDPA/HSUPA offering which could also steal customers away from Sprint and Verizon on that front. I think those numbers should rebound during the 2nd half of this year, 2007, and especially in 2008 when the Iphone becomes materially impacting on Cingular’s net additions as there have already been more than 1 million inqui...

So where you at? Where were you hiding last quarter this time? Were you on tour with Blondie, smoking out to Pink Floyd, in a third world country, jail, AA, a convent??? Where were you Nextel18 and should we expect the same disappearing act this go around when Sprint gets spanked?????

Thought so, can't defend the fact that you were too humiliated to post in Phonescoop. You my friend are weak, always talking about what is to come and never being there when your perfect Utopia crashes. I pity the fact that you are not man enough to defend your little Sprintel in bad times.

Pound Salt MidnightDT. Nextel18 doesn't need a defense team, he needs to answer why he talks crap and then hides instead of defending himself when wrong.

There's not much to say there, is there? Sprint-Nextel is going through merger hell just as Cingular and ATT did two plus years ago, and, just like the Cing-ATT deal, it's gonna take them a long time to get it together.

If nextel18 said otherwise, he was obviously wrong. Case closed, no need to dwell on it. 🤨

A million preorders != new subscribers... It means that some people are upgrading and renewing and some are buying it outright because they are that crazy about anything apple because they can't upgrade. I'm sure there's a segment of new subscribers in that million though, which should help.

Very true. To have already 1 million inquiries on a device like that, without 3G, is amazing and wait until Apple comes out with a device that has 3G how much more it would be wanted. Yea, everyone wants Apple products and that is evident by the quarterly results and IPOD and desktop/laptop sales. (I do have Apple shares by the way as a disclosure.)

We should be seeing a lot of positive impacts from late 3rd quarter to 4th quarter of 2007 and throughout 2008 as this device, the IPHONE without 3G and then if they launch it with 3G will be a huge impact to both Cingular and AT&T.

When does Verizon report its Q1 numbers?

If they do well, along with some others, then we may not have seen the saturation point in the US market yet.
