Sidenote on Frequencies (800-900MHz vs 1800-1900MHz)

I've heard that, all else being equal, LOWER frequencies (say 800 MHz) penetrate walls/buildings/objects better than higher freqs (say 1.9 Ghz). And that, above 3 GHz, building penetration starts to become very poor indeed (yes, I know, wireless carriers operate at frequencies below that).

This true? And if so, does anyone know the scientific explanation as to why?

Correct... has to do with density of the material... and resonance too... grapes are resonant around 2ghz... which is why they splode if you put one in a microwave... but also why an apricott won't do the same... that's probably resonant around 900mhz. 🙂

higher frequency == higher bandwidth/speed but it's mostly LOS...

Lower frequency == less bandwidth but goes further (think of shortwave radio (3-20mhz) going thousands of miles and then FM radio which goes 50-90 on the same transmitter power...

Apologies for my ramblings... I'm running an 11 hour shift on 2 hrs of sleep. 🙂
