Quick question.....If I want to hook up my phone to my laptop and surf the web wirelessly, would I have to sign up for a data plan or would I just use up my minutes, meaning unlimited nights and weekends?

It depends. You can use the slower speed option which gives you speeds of like 30-60K and just use your minutes. If you want the faster speeds which are 60-80K and bursts up to 144K then you need a plan. Also if EVDO is in your area you will need a data plan. The data plans can be purchased by the Megabyte or an Unlimited plan.
