A Blackberry device MUST have a Blackberry feature plan on the account. This is because of how a Blackberry interacts with a network (not just VZW, but any blackberry). The PDA devices that utilize VZW's "push" service (otherwise code named VZW wirelesssync) are not "searching" for emails. The systems just pushes the email to the phone. However, if you set up the hotmail account on the device and set it to check the network for email periodically, you will WANT a data plan to avoid the huge PER kb charge. Great explanation, just to add on as well.

Another reason for the plan is the agreement that the carriers have with RIM. We are not allowed to sell a blackberry w/o a plan per out contract with RIM.

Once again Crazyeagle nice explanation.

How have you been. Did you see pictures of that treo gandolf/800 series on engadget. That thing is butt ugly.

I wish BB would make a phone that doesnt need to be constantly synching with the server.

Blackberry makes great phones, but I really think they are missing a HUGE chunnk of the market by forcing people to get data plans...

alot of people just want a reliable multimedia phone, with a solid calendar, but dont need/want to pay for the data plan.

The only reason I dont have a blackberry now is because of VZN's ridiculous data prices...
