Sending Text Messages to Non-Verizon Phones

I tried sending a text message to a Sprint user. The status indicates "sent" but other text messages show a status of "delivered."

Does this mean Verizon doesn't allow sending or receiving text or pics messages to other carriers? If this is true, then the value of text messaging is diminished.

I regularly send text msgs to a friend who has AT&T Wireless (now Cingular)... its never been a problem, except one time when I sent a very long text message (i.e. right at the 160-character limit).

Verizon has an open text messaging service...which means we can send out to any carrier, foreign or domestic. If other carriers block those messages from getting to their phones...it's not on Verizon's side. So complain to sprint... 😎

text you can send and receive text from other carriers, it may be a problem with that persons account, remember, sprint uses a different kind of texting servcie, they have to connect to recieve text... but NO carrier can send mms (pics) back and forth... except at&t and cingular for obvious reasons...

Ditto to that....

Iner-carrier text messaging is possible - SMS - but inter-carrier MMS is not. Some day it will be. All carrier's, excpet Cingular/AT&T, use the same MMS platform.

Thanks to all of you who replied. I guess I'll have to find out what happened on the other end.

I am disappointed in not being able to send pictures.

Chances are they got the message... it just won't show delivered on your handset. Verizon to Verizon messages stay on the Verizon network and it can communicate back to your phone. When you send a message to email or off network the message is sent and Verizon's hands are washed from their on out. It should be delivered but your phone won't know it.

If that's the case, then just call and see if she/he received it.

Going back to what Rapifire was saying, I agree, it really does suck that we can't send pic/vid msgs to outside carriers. That would be awesome if we could.

Actually, the difference is that when sending VZW to VZW, Verizon controls both ends and can verify that, yup, the person you sent it to got the message. When sending to most other carriers, VZW hands it off to a third party. It's there job to deliver it. It goes off the VZW network and there's not an easy way to verify that the message got there.

But like other posters have mentioned, VZW does have a way to pass txt messages from one carrier to another, even overseas.
