I'm 5 months into my two-year contract and have been using the LG8300, which is a great phone. I'm thinking about upgrading to a PDA/Blackberry device, so here are my questions:
1. Do I have to pay full retail for the new device?
OR
2. Can I get the 2-year contract price if I'm willing to sign a new contract?
Just looking for some insight. Thanks.

Yes. You would have to pay full retail.

Or you could switch to a family share, activate the new phone number as a primary line, then after you get the activation price, have an esn change done so your old phone number is on your new pda, you will have a contract for the secondary line and your new every two will switch to the new phone number that is the primary line, not a big deal b/c you can always have it switched over to your secondary line at a later time, and I'm sure you'll find a cooperative rep to do this, the commision is much better on a primary line than a secondary line so you're making the rep money and saving money for yourself, and its completely legal and doesn't violate verizon policy, just make sure you follow this method otherwise you won't get the good price ...

Not a bad thought but now if he wants to cancel you fail to tell him that he would have to pay an early term fee of $175 for each of those lines. 😲
If it was me I would got to Ebay or Craigslist and look there for a phone. I bought my 8703e BB on Craigslist and it has been great. You can find a deal and if at worst case you could also sell your 8300 after you get your other phone and get some cash back

true, but don't forget that the etf goes down $5 each month, its really not that much more money a month, although he does have two contracts that way.

and one thing i forgot to mention in my response, if you want to risk buying a phone off of ebay or craigs list be my guest, but there are no guarantees that phone hasn't been blacklisted (ie reported as lost/stolen) and usually its kind of a pain in the rear to find out if the phone is blacklisted in the first place (basically he'd know when he tried to activate it) and there's also no warranty on the phone and no way to put insurance on the phone in case it is damaged...i don't know about you, but if i'm going to spend over $200 on a phone i want some type of guarantee that 1. its going to work and 2. i'm protected if something happens to my investment, but that's just a personal preference

That's not a very good idea. Let's say that he's sitting on the $59.99 plan for 900 minutes, and he uses those 900 minutes. The lowest family share plan he can get into is 1400 minutes for $89.99. So he's paying $30 more a month, and he will be bound to a new contract. He currently has 19 months left on his contract as opposed to 24.
$59.99 * 19 = 1139.81
$89.99 * 24 = 2159.76
If he purchased a Treo (which is what...$700?), it would still be cheaper than to activate a new family share account.
1139.81 + 700 = 1839.81
2159.76 - 1839.81 = 319.95
So even though he would be getting the initial discount on the PDA, he'd still be paying over $300 more by switching over to a family share plan. That doesn't include the cost of...

true, but it pleases customers b/c they don't look at the cost like that and this might sound a bit dishonest, but i'm not going to argue with them about it b/c they'll go elsewhere, besides i get more money on a higher price plan than i do for an outright phone sale so its helping me too, judge me if you'd like but if my customer is happy and keeps coming back than i don't see a problem, if they took the time to think it out in there head they'd come up with the same conclusion as you, and frankly i don't have time to figure out that kind of stuff with the amount of customers that come through the story on a daily basis, i don't mislead or lie to my customers, but i'm a salesman for better or for worse that is my job and i have no problem b...

That's fine, but we're on an internet forum. You might as well give him honest advice here since you don't make anything out of it anyway.

i didn't lie to him so i don't see how its not "honest" i actually did what i suggested for my personal phone, so its not like i'm giving him advice that i wouldn't take myself. it just saves on the upfront cost of the phone, i didn't intend for this to turn into a big deal, maybe i will just keep my information to myself

Do what you will. There's a pretty big difference (to me) about my personal opinion on the way things work and the way that things actually work face to face. In the store, I probably would have suggested the same thing because you're right. Most people don't take the time to really think about it. They want a quick fix.
However, on the internet, it doesn't matter what you would do to earn more commission or whatever your motivation is. Since I don't gain anything by telling him to do one thing over the other, it just makes sense to tell him what the cheapest option is.
