Ok, long story short, finally thinking of giving up my Motorola Star Tac, and am looking at these 3 phones. I would like your opinion.

Here is what I care about. Large phone book, decent battery life, bluetooth, and above all else reception, being the MOST important. In the past I have tried other phones and none of them compared to the star tac for me, so I really want to be sure.

Here is what I am looking at.

Samsung SCH-a990

LG VX8700

and

Moto Razr maxx ve

All the other features these phone provide are nice, but I depend on my phone for work (outside sales) so what do you think would be right for me?

Thanks in advance for your help

I would get the LG 8300, which isn't on your list, but is an excellent all around phone that seems to meet your needs. Its also a pretty tough phone.

Just my two cents. Out of the three you selected I would pick the Samsung 990.

I appreciate your 2 cents. But while not as important as say reception, I would like a nice thin phone, that I don't have to worry about breaking the antenna off of.

How about the RAZR2? That would seem to meet your requirements, and it just went on sale for Verizon online.

It should be in VZW stores next Wednesday or so.

I do have to say, though, I kind of distrust Motos. They often seem to have problems, especially early on.

I second this decision. I'm one of three sales reps in my store and all three of us have picked this phone for our concession line. It's an amazing phone and as a co-worker recently put it "this phone will do everything but have your first child."

He's referring to the XV6700, it's a PDA. However since you said thinness was what you are looking for, I'd recommend the LG-VX8700. I've had it since April and it's an awesome phone. Decent battery life, great sound quality, and good picture quality. Nothing I can complain about the device.

I have the 8700, and I agree, it's a good phone. However, I would not say the battery life is decent. I think it sucks. I use the 8700 on my secondary line (I carry 2 phones), and it's fine that way, because I don't use that phone as much. But when I had it on my primary line, there was no way I could even come close to making it through the day. When I'm at work, I probably use my phone maybe 1 hour talking, but text a lot. My only other complaint is the phone gets hot when you talk on it. Like, almost instantly hot. Other than that, it's a great phone! 🙂

Nothing out right now is going to come close to the reception that you have on your startac.

Having said that, the Samsung a990 doesn't get great reception in poor signal areas.

Motorola is known for getting good reception. If it were between those phones, I'd try the Motorola first. I'm wary of Motorolas though because they seem to have problems with the software in their phones.

The 8700 works well. I personally like it a lot more than the RAZR Maxx, but I don't know how well it works in weak reception areas. I usually sell the Motorola V325 or the LG VX5300 if reception is the biggest need.

Once you activate one of these phones to your account, you won't be able to reactivate your StarTac. You want to be sure that the phone you're going to is really what you want before you do anything because there's no going back.

that is true. I would start a family share plan, add a line and try the phone out first before giving up your star tac. You can try 2 phones under the 30 day gurantee, on day 29 take the phone back and shut down the 2nd line under the 30 day gurantee, then go somewhere and get the phone you liked the best and upgrade your current line. Heck, if you want to, you can try another phone on that 3o day gurantee under your current line, and if you dont like it, then get the one you liked from your first trial. You can trade to 1 new phone under the 30 trial per line. So basically you can try 3 or 4 phones out before switching and not costing you anything.

Just make sure you are sure you want to give up the star tac when you upgrade your cu...

Thanks for the input, I actually have planned to add a line to test the phone out. I am well aware that once the star tac is disconnected, there is no going back. My experience with other phones have been through work. And Thats how I know, many phones now a days don't seem to get as good of reception.

I had the 8700 and it was a nice phone, very nice looking and reception was pretty good. I didn't keep if for 3 reasons:

1.Battery life was not as good as expected.
2.Phone gets hot when you are on if for more than a minute.
3.When phone is close the ringer is hard to hear in your pocket.

I would second the 8300, battery is amazing. I can bring it up to the lake and have virtually no receptions yet the thing has 2 bars left even after chasing what little reception there is on the lake. I have had that for over a year and keep going back to it after trying others. But like you said you wanted thin and that is not thin, but I would not worry about the antenna at all the thing is like a timex (takes a likin and keeps on tickin).

The best phones Verizon ever had since that Startac is the Motorola V710 and E815. They are no longer a current models but still far superior in reception, voice sound quality (both ends) and battery life to any Verizon phone out there.

If those features are important to you you may want to see if Verizon has any new-old stock or refurbs available. Or you can get one on eBay.

The e815 is basically the same thing as the V710 except it adds EVDO and gives up the analogue band. If you are in a remote area that depends on analog, get the v710.

Yeah, they're great phones if you don't mind a phone that power cycles constantly and is notorious for having a bad charge port.

I actually have a E815 as my work phone (company provided) the battery life is unbelievable, the reception is decent, but since I end up carrying 2 phones (work provided and personal) I would really like one of them thin and small, to keep in my pocket.

Well, the Samsung a990 you mentioned in your original post isn't really a slim phone, either.

Though I will grant you that the Moto e815 is a tank.

Stellar reception, very thin, stylish, no antenna stub, Bluetooth, all around great phone.

You should get that. It just dropped to $29 with 2 year online recently, which is a great deal.
