$1.99/Mo. Extended Warranty-- Worth It?

SystemShock

Quick Q: Is the 2 bucks a month extended warranty really worth it? I'm thinking it might be, in order to protect the phone when its in the 'no man's land' area between months 12 and 20, i.e. after the regular warranty has run out, but before you can upgrade again.

And does the extended warranty cover things like the hinge breaking from normal wear (as in, it just broke, I didn't drop or abuse it), or the phone's body coming apart from normal wear?

I worry about such things 'cuz my old Nokia 6256's hinge broke, and I didn't do a damn thing to it. 😕

Guess the best Q is... what does the extended warranty NOT cover?

It's a crapshoot. I have never purchased a warranty on ANY product and have never regretted it.

On the other hand, it is a great moneymaker for those who sell them. Here's what Consumer Reports says:

Extended warranties aren’t worth the cost--with possible exceptions

On the way to the check-out counter, you have no doubt been waylaid by a sales clerk extolling the benefits of buying an extended warranty. An extended warranty kicks in after the manufacturer’s warranty runs out. The insurer pays to repair or replace the item for a specified period of time, usually two to five years from the date of purchase. (Some start on the date of purchase, even though the manufacturer’s warranty is also in effect.)

A variation, the re...

even if there is a deductable. its insurance. even if you pay insuranc eon your house, sure you may never need it, if you pay insurance on ur car, sure you may never need it, sure you may pay health insurance and never need it, same w dental, every insurance is the same. and you may never need it. but then again you might. accidents do happen. and just like other insurances they do charge a deductable. so its all if you are willing to risk it and payiong full price for a phone if yours breaks. if you have that kind of money go ahead.

Well I do have some information for you...I do not know where the above person got there information from, but Verizon does not offer a free extended warrenty on there phones unless you are a VIP customer ( you would recieve communcation in the mail about it). The extended warranty you would recieve between the months of day bought phone to 12 months. So if it is a defect from the phone and not from "normal" wear and tear it will be covered. It is all personal option on to get the extended warranty my self I have the insurance for 5.99 ( insurance with Asurion and the extended Warrenty combined) If you have any questions, just let me know!

You can purchase the $1.99 extended warranty or you can choose the $5.99 total equipment coverage which is the extended warranty and the insurance. There is no deductible for the extended warranty but it won't cover if the hinge breaks(Unless you have the samsung 650 or 670). Those phones had a known defect in the hinge. You also do not get the extended warranty for free if your on a 79.99 PP or higher. I don't know where that person got that idea.

per Verizon's worry free gaurantee you can receive a replacement phone between months 12-24 if your phone has a manufacture defect for a 50 fee. In other words you can get a FRU replacement for 50 bucks. The cost paid out in first year is 2x12=24. So after a year of time period that you already can get a FRU for fee you have paid out 24 bucks. Now, if you never need a FRU through months 24 you have now paid 48 dollars. All this does is waive the FRU fee. If you have insurance it is only a buck a month...or total pay out of 24 dollars.

Also, keep in mind the extended warranty DOES NOT cover damage, lost, stolen, or your battery.

Now, make the educated decision to suite what is best for you...also, as another note, you can upgrad...

Little known fact... you can actually add the extended warranty after a year. You can't add the insurance itself after 15 days (or rather, you physically might be able to but the insurance company will deny your claims) but you can upgrade (or downgrade) from the $5 wireless phone protection to the $6 total equipment coverage any time you want. Or stick the $1.99 extended warranty on. There's not a lot of point in paying for it during the first year since it only applies to the second. A VZW rep might balk at putting it on after 11 months but there is nothing physically preventing them from doing so, so long as they can document that at one point in time you did purchase the equipment through a VZW channel. Understand?

Note that now that ...
