Its all about signal strength- i.e. how close the tower is to you, plus how good your phone's reception is at picking up that signal, plus what technology you're using (CDMA or GSM/TDMA).

For example, with any carrier, if the nearest tower(s) are simply too far away, the signal will be comparitively weaker and may not be strong enough to penetrate buildings very well.

But all else being equal, Verizon (and Sprint) use CDMA technology, which is more tolerant of weak signals than GSM or TDMA (used by T-Mobile and Cingular/ATTW).

If you wanted to stick with Verizon and you're eligible for an equipment upgrade, you could try getting another phone that's a reception champ and see if that clears things up, but if that doesn't help, then ...

Speaking of towers...would someone mind telling me or directing me to a site that has information on VZW cell towers in the Oahu, Hawaii area? I see where the original poster is coming from, as I seem to have a hard time getting full signal strength in my own home. I understand location is a factor, but Honolulu looks pretty well covered on the Local Digital Choice coverage map. I also experience weak-no signal in some buildings at school as well....thanks for any help that may be out there 🙂

It would also obviously matter if the tower was obstructed by a hill or mountain, a LOT of tall buildings, etc. etc. A tower could potentially be fairly near you and still not give good signal strength in certain blindspots. ☚ī¸

Building penetration is not solely dependant on nearness of towers. All things being equal a carrier using the 800mz frequency will have better in building reception than one using 1900.

For example, most of VZW's system is 800mz while all of Sprint's is 1900

That's true- everything else equal, lower freqs do indeed penetrate solid objects better.

Which is why freqs above 3 GHz are often referred to as 'garbage spectrum'.

That's true, however, I don't if VZW uses more of one bandwith or another.

With some phones, especialy the LGs you can force all digital calls, or all PCS calls, or all analog calls (if its a trimode phone)

Must depend on location because I have never had a reception problem at work - have worked in 2 different large buildings - one 14 stories, currently in an 18 story - not near windows either. Currently in my work building looking at 6 bars 🙂 I am in the city surrounded by other tall buildings as well - no problems (knock on wood 😉 )

well aparently the rest of my message got cut off, too! I couldnt get a link from a message post to copy and be pasted on another posting...lol oh well...I was just saying that in my old condo nothing wireless could get a signal inside, but all worked fine the minute I spepped out the door. Then, I asid if anyone has a minute, and is interested, hop on over to the T-Mobile forum, and look at the post that says "overall coverage" and read the discussion that went on with it. It covers networks, coverage, frequencies, bands, modes etc...and in pretty good detail, too. Its really interesting if you have a minute and you want to 🙂
