Nope, Verizon isn't going GSM. GSM is going to be a dead tech in a few years.

What's going on is that they may (hasn't been decided yet) go to LTE down the road, like 2010-2011. A Vodaphone (minority owners of VZW) executive was lobbying for it, but that doesn't mean VZW will go that way.

LTE is part of the upgrade path for GSM, but really isn't GSM (just like how WCDMA/UMTS, while also part of the upgrade path for GSM carriers, actually borrows from CDMA technology). LTE is actually OFDM-based.

Nope. Verizon is Considering an LTE network as well as UMB and WiMAX.

LTE is not really GSM technology, it's just what GSM would evolve to... I mean GSM is already using some form of CDMA for Data

Look at it this way, Today we have GSM(AT&T, T-mob), CDMA(Verizon, Sprint, Alltel), and iDen(Nextel)

The next generation of wireless will be LTE, UMB, and WiMAX. All wireless companies will keep their current voice/data networks but 4G will be able to handle both voice and data. Factors Verizon will consider is Global usability, equipment cost, maintainance cost, and cost of manufactoring cellphones.

What your forum is not taking into account so far is what the rest of the world will do. When you say that GSM will evolve to the new system, just how soon will that happen in Europe and anywhere else where GSM is already the standard? We're talking about a ton of money here, and unless everyone is on the same page at the same time, you're potentially going to have as bad a situation under your futuristic scenario as you have now under 3G circumstances.

I just recently left Alltel in Charlottesville to go to work for an AT&T agent. A year ago, I wouldn't have done it. Today, it's much more viable. GSM in the US still doesn't have the footprint that CDMA has, but the platform IS moving forward. You will also notice that AT&T and T-...

The idea of coming out with either UMB, Wimax, or LTE has to deal with the fact that it is better than GSM and CDMA networks out there on every single level. You can also see in many parts of the world they are starting to roll out with Wimax networks and testing and trailing UMB and LTE networks. They know that this a growth energy with a lot of potential while CDMA and GSM are starting to become older technologies, although it would exist for years more, it is time to start spending less and focus on the better technologies out there.

As long as it's done as seamlessly as possibly, I'm with you 100%, nextel18. What I would really like to see is the entire world using ONE technology. You have to figure that sooner or later, that WILL happen. I'd just rather have it sooner than later. It would sure make life a whole lot easier.

Well, if you look at the facts of UMB, Wimax, and LTE they are actually using one main technology with OFDM/A and a MIMO advantage, but they are also using other UL protocols, which I think differentiates them from each other. I think one main standard, is ideal, but I don’t think it will happen as prices will probably be very expensive on every level when you look at the devices itself and then the price points for the networks. There will be bidding after bidding for these spectrums and how would you figure out on the roaming side, which will get what part of that subscriber. I think all of these questions and other variables might go into the favor of having separate technologies because if you have more vendors and more choice the p...

We have gone over this about 100 times. Please search next time. LTE isn’t a GSM network that Verizon Wireless is going to upgrade.
