VoIP over Wi-Max threatens 3G networks?...

The Economist recently had an article where they stated that VoIP over Wi-Max could make cellular 3G networks practically unnecessary. Also according to an interesting article in The Register, cellular carriers are fighting back by making VoIP part of their 3G abilities:

Interesting read, though I think Wi-Max could be tough to compete with, due to its great range. But its not here yet, won't be for awhile, while 3G is starting to be deployed.

Although it does pose an interesting thought... If cell phones could roam on Wireless Networks via Wi-Fi (or Wi-Max)... combined w/ Cell towers could dead spots be a thing of the past? Cost Effectively Wireless-G runs the same price as Gigabit Ethernet now (last time I checked anyways... I know prices fluctuate in this industry more so than the cellular industry)

I actually was watching TechTV a few months ago and they were doing specials on VoIP and comparing the different carriers that would be offering it. They mentiond that Wi-Fi cell phones could be the wave of the future eliminating cell towers. They said that the only drawback would be hacking but they are supposedly working on that. I also remember seeing a phone featured on phonescoop that operated on GSM/WiFi if im not mistaken. Was it really there Rich or was it that stuff I was smok...err uhh was I imagining things? Take this as a rumor guys and not a fact. Ill probably get bashed by someone but I am just stating an interesting rumor.

All I know about this which was on phonescoop.com I think last month?! (correct me if i'm wrong) was Nokia testing GSM over Wi-Fi... Haven't heard of any phones or results from the tests... Just speculation that the tests are going "Very Well."... It would be great though... I wonder how far away it is though...

Interestingly, Ericsson has just joined the Wi-Max forum. Hmm...
