The news comes as Sprint (FON: news, chart, profile) reportedly is on the verge of agreeing to a $35 billion merger pact with Nextel Communications (NXTL: news, chart, profile). That dealt would be scuttled if Verizon (VZ: news, chart, profile), the largest U.S. telephone company, were to swoop in to acquir...

Um... okay.

Doesn't really mean anything- companies often say one thing and then do another. We'll see how it plays out.

Personally, I don't think Verizon needs to buy Sprint. They seem like they could retake #1 in customer base on their own. Or they could try to merge with a regional carrier, such as Alltel... more likely to pass regulatory muster, fewer integration headaches, and they'd get #1 back instantly to boot, just like they would with Sprint.

well if verizon buys sprint
1. the fcc, ftc, and doj will struck the deal down.
2. your right verizon doesnt need sprint. they will get number 1 in 1-2 years anyway becuase they outpace cing/att wireless.
3. verizon would have to sell their stake in vzw and vice versa with vodaphone. i dont think they will do that for sprint. i think vodaphone already said earlier they arent interested in sprint or nextel. verizon hinted the same as well.
4. vzw already has a lot of 1.9ghz spectrum and contiously buying more.

the key thing... FCC,FTC, AND DOJ will struck the deal between verizon/sprint or voda/sprint. only thing they would approve is the nextel/sprint deal.

we will see on WED

The current news section of Phone Scoop states Vodafone gave Verizon permission to bid. Same in the newspapers? So why any question. Doesn't anyone consider these sources credible?

The "source" was the wall street journal and it appears that they were wrong.

I heard on the radio this morning that the sprint and nextel had reached an agreement on their merger and were planning on going through with it thus making their total customers around 35 million. If that is the case then I doubt verizon will be able to bid on them, and for sprint and nextel merger, unfortunetly when you put to turds together you just get one big pile of s$%!t
