Voip with EVDO and WiFi

I would like to combine a cell phone with WiFi.
I need the WiFi at home and work where I have poor cell reception but good Wifi access to internet.

I have looked at Truphone, GizmoProject, and Skype, but all seem to require GSM, sole carrier in the US is Cingular/TMobile, and are only available on Nokia N80 product line.

Yet in this forum, I see a variety of postings regarding successful testing of voip and evdo with verizon.

I could switch back to ATT, or use TMobile, but I get huge work related discount if I go with Verizon.

Is there a phone available that combines WiFi and EVDO so I can install gizmo project and communicate in style? Or is it back to ATT?

sounds like tmobile hotspot. I heard verizon is coming out with something like that. I don't know if it will be wifi or something like sprints solution to just use CDMA Freq. That way it works on any phone unlike tmobile.

I have not seen anything that you can use VOIP with EVDO. But if you get poor reception it would do you no good!

pocketpc for skype allows you to do voip over wifi or edvo if pocketpc has wifi/edvo available.

is that like the same thing as connecting my computer to evdo via a card and using like a sopft phone or something like vonage USB phone?

And this is the other piece of the puzzle I was looking for. I'll check Skype and pocketpc price on Verizon, and then compare to using gizmo project with nokia on att and then make a decision.

I really like the idea of dialing skype/gizmo over WiFi as a default, and just using cell minutes on the road when I am outside of WiFi coverage.

Obviously have to decide if I can tolerate PocketPC, will check reviews on other forums.

Thx boss.

VoIP is possible over EVDO Rev A. But only if Verizon allows it. Verizon intends to use VoIP for PTT and eventually it's entire voice network.... but only if you PAY for it.

This is the answer to the second question I was looking for. Verizon blocks IP phone clients for now, other than their own when it is released.

That means it is intended to be difficult or impossible to avoid pay per minute charges.

IP will reduce network costs, improve service, but it won't have an immediate impact on customer prices until much later.

Thx boss.

What about VoIP over the WiFi on an i760 or XV6800? The only reason I care is that it would make this phone usable on vacation out of the country.

I can get my email from my Exchange server via WiFi or EVDO, and I would like to be able to do a VoIP call if needed.
