I'm getting ready to purchase a new phone, and part of me drools over the smartphones. I went in to the local Verizon store, and I was trying to figure out about pricing. I always assumed you just pay the 5.99 a month for mobile web, but they told me mobile web doesn't work on the smartphones.

When I added a smartphone on the site, it added 20 dollars a month for a data package. The verizon people said unless I was doing a ton of emailing, I probably wouldn't need it, unless I got a Blackberry and then it was required.

Basically, I don't use my phone a lot, I only have the 450 minute plan, and don't use anywhere near that, like maybe 45 minutes a month, including my in-network calls. If I just wanted a phone that I could occasional...

If you're not going to use the data then I suggest you invest in a different toy. PDA's are for more than just status...

I wouldnt say that. I want a PDA/Smartphone so I can sync up my Outlook calendar and to-do list. I do not care about using the data plan. I dont have the need yet to keep up to date (to the min) on my email. I just don't want to carry a phone and a PDA.

This is true. I use my Samsung i730 for pretty much everything including data. But my uncle has a Q just to keep organized. He's always around a computer/internet so he doesn't need the internet on his phone.

So if you are going to use a smartphone for at least somethings of what it's made for, then go ahead. But if you are just buying it for status, I'd highly recommend against it. Even if you just want it for the keyboard, get a QWERTY phone like the U740.

That reminds me: look into the LG Voyager. It's like the enV but takes on some of the iPhone's qualities including web browser. So if you web browsing, take a look at. It doesn't require the expensive PDA plans, only the 15 dollar Vcast plan.

The Voyager does lack the heftier calendar and scheduling apps that a smartphone has, if you can get around with a minimal calendar then pick the Voyager.

Maybe just finding some one with an old Q that doesn't want it could work out as well.

You just have to remember that if you don't have a data plan the usage on a PDA is $15 per megabyte. It doesn't take much to get to a megabyte. If you're even going to think about browsing on occasion you need either the 24.99 option or the unlimited.
