Looks like a done deal, unless the regulators somehow have some objections:

It also looks like Nextel is going to be slowly migrating its 15 million or so customers over to CDMA:

Sprint Nextel said it would continue with Sprint's planned deployment of CDMA2000 1x EV-DO technology across its network and plans to eventually migrate Nextel's iDEN-based network in the 800 MHz spectrum bands to CDMA over the next several years. Nextel's much-heralded walkie-talkie Direct Connect offering will also be migrated to the EV-DO network in the 2006 or 2007 time frame following the deployment of EV-DO Revision A.

Unfortunately no.

Prices on average do not go down in the wireless industry. Cost of expansion, research, inflation.. all builds up to a higher and more expensive product.

This is so weird. Granted I know Nextel has been looking into CDMA but it just seems so odd. How is the SprintPCS readylink service? I mean I am to assume THAT is what the direct connect will be based on?

It just seems like a very wrong match of technology. This is not going to go easy for either company. I mean you have all these businesses that RELY on the Nextel direct connect. I know, I know, Nextel isn't going to kill their network right away.. but still that is a hell of alot of work for little gain IMHO.

Agreed. I can only surmise that they thought it was a good idea because the larger combined company would be in a better position to finance the building out of Sprint's network. I can tell you from personal experience that Sprint desperately needs better coverage.

I guess they were looking down the road at a world where no one would be able to compete with Verizon or Cingy/ATTW on coverage, and maybe panicked a little?

I think Sprint Nextel will opt to go with qchat. It's the best PTT for cdma and nextel owns the exclusive rights to it.
