BEWARE DATA CHARGES

NOVERIZON22

Nov 20, 2007, 10:58 PM
I suppose that those who post replies to those who have excess data charges work in the industry. I just received a $3400 data oveage charge by Verizon. I had no idea that charges like this were even possible, Verizon's response was that it is not unusual and that they have seen charges in the tens of thousands of dollars. I have had my Motorola Q for 2 months on the $25 data plan. They cannot substantiate the charges nor will they drop them.
I don't think the normal non-cellular employee knows about this. I didn't. 😡

wait what are you talking about? you are on the 25$ data plan meaning you get 10 megs of data, correct?

The overage rate on that plan is half a cent per KB.

how much data did you use? you would of had to use a TON to rack up 3400$ in overage

Even if you connected to the internet a few times and forgot to actually end the connection on the phone, you wouldn't get that much kb usage. You have to be transferring a lot of data (browsing internet daily, using wireless sync, sending huge files). You should have got the $44.99 plan.

It doesn't surprise me. I've seen that happen before with the Q. The Q, unlike other PDAs, continuously connects to check for updates. If you don't turn that feature off, you end up with a bill in the thousands. Unless, of course, you get the unlimited PDA package which you really should do anyway.

I knew about that. Getting set up with a PDA with the $25 data plan isn't a very good idea. I don't even mention it to people any more.

That's why I put my i760 on ebay. My last bill was about $175 more than usual. The rep told me that if I don't open a pix message once it's sent, the data will keep running. Is that true? I didn't get the unlimited data because I get wifi @ work/home.

No, it won't keep running. It is just stored in your pix place. You won't get any data charges unless you go to your pix place to get the picture. The actual message that says "You have a new picture message" (or whatever) is treated like a text message.

I don't like the charges associated with PDAs in general. I have a Blackberry right now, and the monthly data is raping me (even though it's unlimited). My bill is twice as high as it used to be. I'm upgrading to a u900 as soon as it comes out.

I maybe wrong, but the data arrows continue to flash until I opened it. I was also told if I wanted to stop the data signal was to cut off data all together. I have a pix messaging plan, but apparently a pda data plan cancels out the messaging. So I have about 1 day 12hrs until my i760 finds a new home.

i'm getting the family plan that includes all data and messaging included... this doesn't happen very often on non pda plans does it? i have a 19.99 unlimited data plan and use between 10-20 m...

I think I'm done with wm6 phones. All I really wanted was a real internet browser and a keyboard. It would seem like the voyager would fit the bill.

I'm not so sure. My data arrows are almost always moving. I didn't pay any attention at first bc I had wireless sync. I disabled push. But it still connects on its own. I just sent myself a pic, waited a few minutes before opening it and the data arrows kept moving even after I opened the pic. I know it's not supposed to do that, but it did. You just have to tap on the 1X or EV to end the data connection.

Actually once your data is connected it stays connected until you disconnect it or until you have a weak signal that drops it or it times out or something. That's how it's supposed to work. I don't want to have to wait for my data to connect everytime I pick up my phone to do something on the net. It stays connected so it's always available. If you're not using it there shouldn't be a ton of activity though.

If you connect to the internet often you may not want it to disconnect so you don't have to dial up each time. But that's not what I'm talking about. I have a data plan so I don't care. If you are using pay as you go, you don't want it to stay connected. In this case, the person received a picture msg, didn't open right away and the phone connected to national access. Yes, it may be minimal usage but pix msg isn't supposed to use kb.

I may be wrong then. I have the 8830 which doesn't have MMS. I have to go to my pix place so maybe that's the difference...? It might work differently on a WMx device.

You knew what package you had, you knew that you could incur overages. You had to be transmiting a ton of data to get that kind of charge. Basically too much to "not know u were connecting" as many customers claim with the pay as you go or 10mb package. Some red-flag had to pop in your head once you realise how much data your transfering. I just cant understand how your surprised by this.
