Saw it coming. Once Sprint did it, everyone else was gonna follow. 😢

It's total crap... everyone wants to arm wrestle us onto their stupid $5 or $10 text messaging 'plans'. It's basically a stealth rate increase.

Note to wireless execs everywhere... please to f*** off. 😛

PS- What I mean by the above is that the carriers would loooove to raise all their voice plan prices by 5 or 10 bucks, but they can't, so this is a nice end-run around that for them.

You gotta give in somewhere...if they are gonna offer unlimited texting, then on the lower end, they are gonna have to raise rates for people without a package.

There's a reason why verizon is such a good company. Sometimes you have to do whats right, even if it means raising rates a little bit. (verizon has to eat to!)

If people dont like it, then they should fork over the $5 and maybe skimp on that extra value meal one day per month, lol

Still sucks no matter how you slice it, though.

I remember when texts were 10 cents to send and 2 cents to receive. That wasn't very long ago at all. 😲

Now its gonna be double that to send and ten times(!) that to receive. And for what? Text...

Best way to sum it up... Verizon was greedy, Sprint was greedier (since they did it first).

If I find I average more than 25 texts/month (total, i.e. sent + received), I'll have to knuckle under to the Verizons stealth rate increase... ahem, sorry, I meant get a $5 text package.

If they don't raise the price on THAT as well, of course. They're probably already thinking of eliminating the $5 package and making the $10 one be the cheapest available.... bastids. 😛

The $5 text package is offsheet pricing. It doesn't actually exist unless you call verizon and ask for it. Been that way for 2 years since the Unlimited IN/50 pkg went away.

It's not a stealth rate increase. They'd have to not tell anyone for it to be stealth.

That's not what I meant by a stealth rate increase.

What I'm talking about is that they'd love to tack on an extra 5 bucks a month to everyone's voice plans, but they can't, so forcing people into getting a text package in another way of achieving the same result. 😛

This is incorrect, at least in the Southeast. On page 29 of the "Next Phones" brochure right with all the other text packages is a Basic Messaging headline that outlines what's included in the 5 dollar package. It's just not in the same table.

Well, I don't think it's sprint's fault. we cannot blame sprint for these. Sprint might have done it for business purposes. However it is still VZW's choice to follow it. They could have stayed with their old rates and waited for all the sprint customers who've been pissed by the increase to port to them since they offer text at a lower rate. Well, maybe they just want to raise it as well, sprint just did it first.

it's a move to get people to sign up for text packages. doesn't make sense for almost anyone to go with pay-as-you-go anyway. now, pretty much everybody will be 20 cents a message for text, but US Cellular doesn't charge for incoming texts, pics or calls, so that's nice.

I thought that if you actually send pay per use text/pics and dont have a plan you may opt out of your contract. I did it back when sprint raised thier prices and the last time Verizon did...(got customers out of thier contracts to port to at&t with no cancelation fee)

The basis is that you must have sent text or pics on a pay per use basis every month up to 3 months prior to the change in price

Correct me if im wrong? Maybe the CS rep didnt know what they were doing and letting customers out of thier contract without permission?

😕
Can someone please explain something to me on this issue?
I have been texting on a pay per usage basis and I am wondering that if I go out today and get a $5 per month package, will they raise that price also or just the pay as you go price?
Thanks and Happy New Year.

they are just raising pay per use price. Go get the package(way more for your money), unless you wanted to opt out of your contract once they change the price.

if you average between 25 and 36 messages per month for the last 6 months this MAY be considered a "material adverse affect" which could allow you out of your contract. But the difference per message is nominal. and you'd be hard pressed to get out of your contract this way. After all. There ARE packages out there.

And go to Sprint. Cheap data!

I tried the other time they raised to rate but they wouldn't let me. Hopefully they do this time.

Right now I'm getting free data on my i730 using Q2N, but after I get a new phone, I'm not paying ~$50 per month for data.

Hello, this is Wireless Buddy.
Sprint's coverage is the same as Verizon in my area, not to mention if I so choose, I can force roam on Verizon.

Honestly, I don't have money to blow on mobile internet. But I do like it, and Mogul rocks!

Couple of things here.. to get out of the contract you have to be able to prove that this change is going to be an adverse material change to you. From what I understand you are a kid, so the phone is probably under your parents name.

To prove this is an adverse material change to you, it means you have to be using the pay as you go text service and have enough use to show that we cant just offer a courtesy credit to offset the extra 5 cents a message for the duration of the contract on the lines. For example if you average 10 messages a month and have 10 months left on your contract we will just offer like a $10 credit to you, thus negating any sort of defense you have that it is causing an adverse material change.

The next prob...

Not really a rip off. You don't get charged it if you have a plan. These moves are intended to increase the take rate of sms packages.

You're joking, right? You certainly do get charged if you have a plan, to the tune of $5 or $10 a month... that's the whole idea.

Meanwhile, if you stick with individual texts, you're getting charged 20 cents for transmitting, what.... a few bytes? That's sure some heavy lifting for 'the Network'. 🙄

Yup, its definitely greed, pure 'n simple. Sprint paved the way, now all the other carriers are following. Wheeee. 😛

I am sorry to write this but I don't want to read all of them to find out if this has already been discussed.

Does VZW still have the $5 a month text plan for 250 messages or is it only the minimum of a $10 a month text plan for 500 messages?

Also, is their a plan that had Data & Text Messaging together for an amount of money or are they 2 separate plans??

Thanks

They do still have the $5.00/250 msg pk, though it's not avail on verizonwireless.com for some reason. There are combo text/data plans but they also include minutes. May want to check verizonwireless.com for premium plans or nationwide plans w/email&messaging (for pda and blackberry).
