I have been a customer with Verizon for the last 2.5 years and I was thinking of moving to cingular. Couple of my friends have been complaining that Cingular screws up in billing and they customers are overbilled. I was wondering if this is true??? I have been very happy with verizon but Verizon phones suck!!!

I will be moving out of Syracuse, NY and dont know where I will be moving exactly ..could be to California and dont know which carrier best works there.

My preferences in choosing Cingular or Verizon will be based on the following:

1st priority: Coverage and service
2nd priority: decent phones (not a camera but something with speakerphone)
3rd priority: customer service (I have heard that Cingular reps are rude and dont help...

As far as the first priorty (coverage) It all really depends on where in California you are going to be in, whether is in rural or urban California.
The second priorty (equipment) Cingular offers the best of the best as far as equipment is concerned. We have alot of great devices to choose from.
The third priorty (customer service) I feel there are rude reps in every company. I actually work with some rep's who tend to be rude, however these are the reps that may need another profession if there number one goal is not to make that call a "one call resolution."
Ash, why dont you try the 30 day trial period with cingular, and if fits best for you, keep it. If not continue your service with Verizon. Both are good companies. Yes V...

Perhaps one of the most non-threatening, least sarcastic, logical posts I've read so far on this website. Bravo!

Verizon works great in California, but you're right, their current phone selection sucks. I'd suggest you get here & try what you got b4 making any changes.

Admittedly, I'm leaving Verizon for Cingular. I have a regional plan & my phone is not compatible with their national plan that I need. I tried Verizon's Nokia's, but was unhappy. Luckily, Cingular had a Nokia phone I liked & their service is good where I use it the most, plus Cingular has 7pm nights for an extra $7. This is when our phones get most of their usage.

As far as your first priority, Verizon is my recommendation. 2nd priority, I'd say Cingular.
3rd priority is even odds...I haven't had problems with either. Last, consider your carrier by who you will be calling the mo...

If your top priority is coverage and service, which makes total sense, then Verizon is best. I've used Verizon all over the country without any problems. I briefly tried Cingular here in Chicago where Cingular's service is supposedly at it's best, but did not like the call quality. I used Cingular's cool Moto V600. It was cool with a lot of features, but I was spoiled by the superior call clarity of Verizon. What good is a great phone that get's lousy service?

I'd wait for Verizon to come out with some better phones, as they will in the next 3 months. The LG 8000 sounds like a real winner. The LG 7000 is currently out, and is very impressive as to the earpiece volume and crisp, clear sound. I use the Samsung A670 now and am pretty...

As someone who actually lives in California (SF/Oakland/San Jose Bay Area), I can tell you that Verizon works great out here. I can't remember the last time I dropped a call, and I get coverage everywhere, even inside buildings. They seem to better coverage & reception-wise than anybody else in the Bay Area.

Phone-wise, Cingular is probably better at the high-end (RAZR, etc.), but if you want a midrange or lower-end phone, Verizon has plenty of good models to choose from. I'm partial to Samsungs myself.

Customer service-wise, its my unde...

Cingular and Verizon's service is equal in most places. Cingular will only continue to grow in coverage and reliability. And from my experience CDMA service quality is less reliable than GSM and has more dropped calls. I have yet to get a dropped call on Cingular or an "All circuits are currently busy" message.

Gosh, not in the SF Bay Area, it isn't. Apparently there is a rather sizeable 'hole' in Cingular's coverage in Cupertino, among other places. Verizon consistently outperforms Cingular out here, as I can attest from daily usage on Verizon and some Cingular-using friends. 🙂

Yeah I don't live in California but I've used my phone there and I didn't have any problems, but listen to the ones who actually live there. Where I live Cingular and Alltel are the major choices among people. I find the GSM service here much more reliable and higher quality than CDMA but metropolitan areas are a bit different.

Actually its been my experience that CDMA is a better technology. Just because the global standard is GSM doesn't mean that it is better. Consider this: all true 3G technologies are a type of CDMA technology, in Cingular's case UMTS and HSPDA are W-CDMA formats. As for the reference that Cingular is only going to get better that is true... they are trying to catch up to the quality that VZW has already. I've used my Verizon service in So Cali in LA, Santa Barbara, Riverside, Diego, and pretty much all points in between and have had excellent service while a family member had ATT had the service was middling at best. I know that Cingular's network in Cali leaves alot to be desired, especially going from Riverside to Yuma and then up tow...

WCDMA isn't really a CDMA technology. It uses a GSM core with the same coding overlay that CDMA uses. Still two very different technologies.

Another point you might want to keep in mind if you are going with a national plan is that Verizon's national plan is on network only, thus if you are not on their network you will have roaming charges. The Cingular Nation Plan is no roaming or long distance as long as the call is from and to the US regardless of whether you are on the network or not.
