Sprint's (S) woes intensified at year-end as mobile phone subscribers fled in mass. The flailing No.3 wireless shop is expected to report that it lost more than a half million customers in the fourth quarter, say analysts and industry watchers. Unlike other players feeling squeezed by competition, Sprint can't blame a softening economy for its steepening plunge. Rival AT&T (T) is expected to report blowout subscriber gains and No.2 Verizon Wireless -- co-owned by Verizon (VZ) and Vodafone (VOD) -- is likely to add another big win to its robust growth record.

Wow. Sprint stinks. Badly. Wow.

The I phone was a huge buoy to ATTs subscriber numbers. Now it's up to their customer service to keep them there.

I'm very suprised that companies are still adding all these subscribers. I wonder how close the market is to saturation.

The popular belief among market analysts for years was that the industry was on the verge of saturation. Here we are almost half a decade later and such strong postings in growth continue to crop up quarter after quarter. I don't believe we'll see any significant slowing in subscriber growth for at least another three to four years as the potential consumer market for cell phone service widens.

I see more and more young children and elderly people carrying cell phones day after day...something that has changed drastically in a short time and will continue to do so for quite awhile.
