You MAY be able to use a Sprint phone on Verizon's network, but with a severely limited feature set. The same goes for using a Verizon phone on Sprint's network. Why bother? There are lots of fine Verizon phones available to use on Verizon's much more extensive network.

Can you tell me which phones you would pick?

If you want a very small phone you will have to sacrifice screen size. If you don't mind a slightly larger phone, you can get a much bigger and more vibrant display.
Do you want a phone for making calls or do you want one for phone calls and for taking mediocre pictures? A regular camera is far better than one in a phone. Do you need a PDA? No you can't. Sprint uses thier own tech for their phones. 1900 mhz. Veriz uses their own tech 800 mhz and 3 other techs on thier service. However, you can buy a plan from sprint (america) and roam off a verizon tower, however if more than 50% of airtime is used in roaming mode, you will be charged for roaming. Sprint is not GSM or chip changing. the phones are dedicated sprint service phones.
