Sprint Nextel may take $31B write-down of wireless value

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) — Sprint Nextel (S), the nation's third-largest wireless provider, said Thursday it may have to write off up to $31 billion in value.

The company said that an annual review of its goodwill — what a company is worth beyond its assets — determined that the actual value of its wireless goodwill was less than what is recorded on its books, currently valued at $31 billion.

Now the company is determining how much of a blow the balance sheet will take.

"Based on the work completed to date, Sprint Nextel will be required to record a material, non-cash impairment charge that will represent a substantial portion, and potentially all, of the ...

the company has plenty of doh. they treat their employees like kings and are building a Sprint studio (which is completely unneccesary but still proves my point). plus anyone with 60 million subscribers is gonna have the cash. the plans may be a little low, but the service they get with them is fantastic... customers haven't been leaving because of the product and network... just customer care and billing issues which is being solved right in front of our eyes... i see improvements everyday i come to work. i've seen 3 of my customers leave to go try out ATT and the curve and then come back because the data wasn't working for them. people don't really complain about verizons network (except for data) but they say the charge too much when t...

Yes worthless treating customer like crap by making them spend countless hours fixing Sprint lame billing mistakes, makes Sprint a worthless company. Need examples? How many years has Sprint been trying to fix their crap cs and billing issues, try ten years! And your new CEO Mr Hesse, well his bright idea is to hire more off shore workers, and reduce the American work force! Brilliant! Do you want to talk about Sprint last quarter results?

Means nothing as far as stock price goes. Its already priced at half book value. Sprint is not going anywhere. Their assets are valuable. They would be bought out for book asset value. "Goodwill" is ONLY the additional worth of the name. When the trade name beoomes a v\\aluable asset it is called Goodwill/ So big deal they write 31billion off in good will/ They still have HARD assets that totale less then their current stock price AND they are still profitable.

Sprint will in all likely hood be sold. IN fact they truned down a multi billion dollr offer not too long ago!!!I would not be surprised if Google bought them.
