Researchers claim GSM calls can be hacked on the cheap

Callers, your worst nightmare is coming true... maybe. According to a report, a group of hackers at the Black Hat conference in Washington D.C. claim that they're able to hack GSM calls with equipment costing about $1,000. If you believe the team (and we're inclined to at least have a listen), they can decrypt GSM phone conversations and text messages on a network using inexpensive tools called field programmable gate arrays. Until now, the cost of the technology required to hack GSM transmissions has been prohibitively expensive for all but your government and large-scale snooping operations, but that's beginn...

If that is the case I would make sure you never use a credit card over the phone, do no business over the phone etc. because any scumbag in the US with a $1,000.00 can listen to your calls on GSM πŸ‘€

Oh, but you have no life Joe. You share 550 minutes with your blow up doll and have 1900 rollover you will never use in your piggybank. 😳

Far less than that. Its easier to just make the call then typing out nonsense back and forth. Texting is for teens. Those are the only people I see ripping their little fingers anxiously on the keyboard.

I'll read them. I won't send them. Just press a button say the name....the phone does the rest...all by pressing one button...not a bunch.

Now if you could only work on the brain part of your anatomy...

texting is an easy way to get someone a message when they can't talk or quite frankly just don't want to talk. A text can be typed in 30 seconds. With calls, you never know when you might get stuck on with a blabber mouth for 4-5 minutes.

Sometimes, in certain situations its just easier to text.

And its not just for teens. My mom is 53 and sends/recieves about 200-300 a month. texting USED to be just for teens, but times have changed and now everyone is doing it.

I feel fine. Youth is far too overrated,

Believe me I would not want to be in my 20s again in this world. Not all older people wish they were young. In fact my generation still is very relevant. There were no 60 year old rockers selling out arenas when I was in my 20's. Nope they were the same people who are still relevant today.....Why is that? Because no one could replace them. Or they would have.

please. 80% of ticket holders for McCartney, The Stones, or the rest of the "should have died when I was thirty" generation of rockers are bought by "rich" 40-60 somethings in order to rekindle the love of rock in the youth.

Will I see the Foo Fighters in concert when I'm 50? Not if the ticket is overpriced. If they show up at a local night club for 10 bucks, that's cool.

Everyone knows rock depreciates in value the older you get. My Dad enjoys Porter Wagner now, and Operatic LP's. "Do people expect me to listen to Zeppelin from age 20-60? I sure hope not."-My Dad

Just food for thought. Being 25 rocks, by the way. I still enjoy eating whatever I want and not gaining weight. I should probably cut that back soon, however.

Did you hate life when you were 25 or something? I love this age. I've never really hated any age, however.

I'm enjoying eating whatever I want. Hell yes, I am. It's wonderful. I haven't gained any extra weight. It's so much fun. Eating Wendys at 3 am, cheesecake, fat fat fat. Why, just the other day I ate an entire can of crisco, just to spite you!

I love the '00's. I can turn on my iPod and have instant access to my 500 cd collection with generally lossless sound. (and I have a massive collection of classic rock. Best of Zepp, Jimi, Doors, ELO, CCR, BoC, Allman Brothers, etc.)

I can call or text any of my friends (all of which have a cell phone) and instantly connect with them. I can call my folks at the touch of a button and reminesce with my Dad. I don't even have a landline.

I have $500,000 Liability/uninsured/under insured plus Comp and collision insurance and send them a check for $1200 a year. Most people only by minimum liability coverage.

When you speak of toys and games. Yeah they are better today technically. Today's 20 somethings seem to be more concerned with prestige and outward appearances. The whole "cell phone as a fashion" statement epitomizes that. I have read will peopl will pass on a phone that has all of what they wanted because it was "fingerprint prone" or otherwise ugly. They spend $2000 on friggin RIMS! for crappy cars.

Not many will be able to even afford a home in the one place in time home prices will be at their lowest as well as interest. This is an amazing time for someone to ...

Good for you. You will be one of the few who will not spend their lives consuming and paying off "stuff" while paying rent to another.......Another who shopped at Ross, drove a 5 year old ho hum car and wore Timex. Now they are collecting rent from the guy who put $2000 Rims. $80 sunglasses, and trendy clothes on his credit card and wonderinh how they will pay for all of it.

Who knows who is out to get who, analog eavesdropping affected nobody? What are you smoking? People received telephone bills due to excessive cloned calls, peoples conversations were recorded and it even ruined political careers.

I could give a crap who is out to get me, the thought of a neighbor listening to phone conversations and invading privacy is a big deal. GSM is not secure Joe and it will affect a large number of people if something isn't done.

As for you Joe what are you taking? You act like an over medicated Celexa patient that could care less how deep of a trance their doctor has medicated them into. You are completely clueless and I would think this forum is in agreement.

I tend to assume that ANY phone conversation isn't entirely secure, unless both parties are using a private encryption key with some pretty harsh crypto.

Still, $1000.00 does seem like a disturbingly low price point to eavesdrop. Might be time to go the harsh crypto route.

Nobody is 100% secure, but if anyone is close its Verizon Wireless. Besides, Sprint isn't going to be in business too much longer, they have already lost the only profitable side they had with Sprint landline getting a legal divorce from them and re-branding as Embarq!
