How to use a PDA w/o a data plan

I'm new to verizon. I have a phone number I'm taking over and a Motorola Q. How do I activate this phone and not have a data plan. I want to make sure I don't get charged KB usage but I've read and heard that if you don't have a data plan Verizon mysteriously still charges you KB usage.

The Q will charge you data usage because it's continuously connecting to the tower to check for updates. Last I heard, there's no way to turn that function of the Q off. If you want a PDA and don't want data charges, don't get a Q.

Checking for over the air updates does not incur data charges. You can activate a Q without a data plan have a block on the data, that should cover ya.

No word on the release of the curve. With any blackberry you need a data package associated to it for the device to function. As a phone or otherwise, which might not be a great choice if you're not needing the data.

I would not recomend a Q, it has not been a very good device. Blackberrys on the otherhand are outstanding, but are a little more costly monthly.

Good luck.

I had a customer with a Q get a $3,000 bill because of the automatic updates. I don't trust it.

I have multiple business account holders who have this device, i haven't had any problems after doing this. Most mistakes are made with the wirlesssync. Put the block, even if there's some kind of glich and they are charged, the block covers you and charges are reversed.

lets clarify things. if you have the feature "pay as you go" on you phone, then you will be charged .015/kb. if you req the rep to remove that feature and not have an unl data plan, then they will simply remove all the data features (national access, etc) and the phone won't be able to use data at all. trust me, it works.
