I am about up with my 2 years and am looking at the vx8000. In all honesty how much better is Verizon coverage over Cingular if you are using an all digital handset since Verizon relies on Analog, espeically in rural areas? Can someone please provide some feedback on whether to just jump ship to Cingular when not including analog coverage? Also, anyone know a timeline when ALL of Verizon's current towers will be digital?
THANK YOU!

Im not sure which part of NC you were in, but Ive never had to ask for someone elses phone. I have a very close friend here that has a Verizon phone and she cant wait til her contract is over so I can switch her over to Cingular. She misses more calls then she gets, voicemail doesnt go through, when her phone broke and she went into a Verizon store to make a claim they gave her a refurbished phone, after the fourth phone, she finally got one that worked. Ever time you call her phone, you have to go through that click, click, click untill maybe you get a connection to her phone. Verizon is a great company, but so is Cingular...I say give Cingular a try, 30 day return policy if youre not satisfied...that should give you a long enough time to...

I am in the same position as you, my ONE year contract w/Vrn is up in 4 days.
I was thinking of going to Cingular, but their customer service is one of the worst, and their CLOSED on sunday.
Then I had thought about going to T-Mobile, but their coverage isn't very good.
I am going to hang with Vrn for at least another monthor two to see if they have any better phones or plans.
I was also thinking of getting the Lg Vx-8000, but it might br to high of a price to pay. I don't need the streaming or data stuff. But I could use the camera.
I have come to realize that no matter what you get, there will always be another great phone 6 months from now that everyone will want. When does it end.
By going month to month now...

Well, the FCC requires companies to provide analog phone service through 2007.
...
I'm assuming this is only for companies that currently support it, and had in the past as well? Is it a requirement for any newer carrier who may come around be required to offer analog service in any capacity/scenario?
...
No it is not a requirement. The requirement also is just that the companies must maintain the analog service...not offer the service. That is the reason that several carriers may still have some VERY old customers still using their analog phones (I had one come in just the other day and wanted to buy a new one to work on his service...), but they are not required to have equipment available for its use, or also required to sell service for it.
The government just put this rule in place to make sure that there is SOME serive availble at a given time. Some companies (i.e Verizon, Sprint) still fall back on it when you just CAN'T get service with anything else. Honestly it's not a bad idea...sure the call quality may not be the greatest, but...

In purely digital terms, Verizon and Cingular are about even. If you don't go near analog areas, stick with Verizon...their network is simply more reliable nationwide.
...
A friend of mine recently switched from Cingular in southern California and got Verizon. When I asked if he liked it, he said it was nice to be able to pull into his garage and not drop the call as he did on Cingular. Also, in Yucaipa he had NO Cingular service, and he now has full coverage with Verizon.

Who in their right mind would go to Yucaipa? 😛

The thing people don't seem to understand is that Verizon's coverage is all digital. In the areas where Verizon has towers, there is digital coverage. Most or maybe all of those areas also have analog coverage. The areas where you only see analog are not Verizon's areas... those are areas operated by the roaming partners. Verizon Wireless owns a 100% digital network.
...
That brings a question to mind. If Verizon is all digital then why do I only pickup analog coverage in some areas and also why does th emap that shows enhanced services (which uses digital coverage) differ from their regular calling area map of coverage?
curious..thanks
...
The enhanced coverage map is Verizon's network. That is what they actually own. The rest of the Americas Choice map is roaming partners. Verizon doesn't own the network in those areas. If your only getting analog then you must either not be near a Verizon tower or in a Verizon owned area.
...
If it's included in Verizon's coverage area and you don't get charged roaming for it then what's the harm in considering it a part of Verizon's coverage area?
...
There isn't any. Some people just get it confused and say that a lot of Verizon's network is analog, when in reality Verizon's whole network is digital. The areas with only analog coverage are areas where Verizon doesn't have service itself.
...
Actually VZW still has some analog coverage... very little though... If I had to guess a number i'd say 0.5% of their network. Look at the green on prepaid brochure... that is verizon-owned Analog. But, as mentioned, the rest of the Analog areas are the roaming partners who need to pick up the pace to Digital service.
...
Hmmm... I'll look at that tomorrow. I'm not going to dispute you but I've seen more than once documentation from Verizon that shows 100% all digital network.
...
i appreciate all of the great and helpful responses. But what i seem to be getting now is that the actual Verizon wireless map is acutally smaller than Cingular. If you have an all digital phone with Verizon, you most likely will not get signal in an area that is not considered part of their enhanced services area which leads me to believe that for hte best coverage one must go to Cingular. I don't want to do this b/c I have been happy with Verizon but worry with all these digital only phones. Anyone one what Verizon plans to do to compete with the new map of Cingular since they re choosing to release all of the "latest" phones as digital only for the most part? And as latest I mean phones that have been in use for over a year in other ...

Just because you are using a roaming partners towers doesn't mean they are analog. If you are wondering about certain areas, check it out for yourself...
http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/CoverageLocatorCo ... »It will distinguish between what areas are Analog and which are Digital including the roaming partners (based upon the information they gave VZW).
