YOu guys owe Google a hearty THANK YOU!!!
However..... if I know Verizon from their past, they will charge premium prices to access it and screw it up finding more ways to squeeze pennies from their flock.
Then later down the road when the manufactures step into the game, i don't see it being any better because like you say...A) verizon still can power trip and B) their data prices are crazy.
It's all about Data and verizon fails! Maybe it will improve much later!
And if you lock at sprint--look what happens when you give everything away. Companies are in business to make money, not give away everything under the sun. Deal with the company that best fits your needs and if you dont like it...move on.

imagine an NGO/nonprofit wireless company ... yeah sure buddy you will have every feature known to man kind, but you will drop calls every 10 seconds.
According to whom?
If even 10% of GSM users dropped calls every ten seconds we would all be using CDMA WORLDWIDE...Ya think?
Ease off the Kool-Aid man it's causing you to spew idiotic statements.
There is a difference between profit and gouging.
You do not gain the benefit of Verizons additional profits do you? Maybe someone in the Rocky mountains on a hiking trip will though or where the buffalo roam. Good for them!
You are subsidizing their service.
Non-profits/NGOs have the natural tendency to be less efficient with their resources than for-profit organizations. c'mon AvgJoe, you know this. for-profit organizations are in the business for that, for-profit. gives them a better incentive to maintain their network for customer additions/retention more effectivly than the latter.
yes, I can the benifits of verizon additional profits indirectly. their additional revenue/profits is reinvested back into the company and their infrastructure and this additional spectrum. perhaps looking from the outside it sounds utopian, but we all know its true. there's no incentive to ho...

The interesting thing here is they will allow these manufacturers to buy bulk minutes of air time from Verizon, this is the part that could make it worthwhile if they bring new data rates! ...but I still wonder even with verizon new spectrum if they have enough to allow unlimited streaming.

There is a difference between making money and squeezing every penny from a gullible customer.
I doubt Verizon will be anxious to get the newe new network up and running. They had no choice but to buy it. They may just sit on it. Open source and Verizon are mutually exclusive. ...for now.
There's a reason why att copies just about everything verizon does--VZW is doing it the RIGHT WAY!
People think everything should be free nowadays. If you want a ringtone or a game....pay for it and be done.

Why when you can get it for free, oh yeah my bad...people with verizon have money to throw out the window!
And NO ONE IS FORCHING YOU TO DO IT. Its your choice, if you want to stick it to verizon, dont but their stuff, or take your money to another carrier.
Third party apps are another things, I can downloaded just about any free app I want with my Touch, never found anything worth buying tho....but when I get the Curve I saw some stuff I would probably pay for.
And I know you can get stuff for free, which is fine, I just dont have a problem with verizon charging for ringtones, games, and stuff like that.
Did you see boy genius today...a sheet from sprint was released with the curve release date on it.
I will prolly get it, im eligible for an upgrade now, and I love my 8830, but I really miss having a camera for those quick shots.
Sounds like your getting one as well? Am I right?
yeah, im hoping to spend less than $200 on mine, that would make for a pretty sweet deal!

att does the same stuff that verizon does. And once again, if you dont want to pay--you dont have to. If you want a ringtone, then yes, you will pay for it. But atleast they are putting back into the company by providing more spectrum and improving coverage.

What you don't understand is coverage everywhere means nothing. Why would I care if Wyoming has great coverage everywhere? I am only concerned with what is available to me where I use my phone. From a corporate standpoint ...

That is such a crook some people like to know that they will have coverage if they go to Wyoming!....some people don't want to give up reliability and having to hit redial! 🙄

Yeah having to redial a few times a month is a great reason to give up all the freedom and flexibility I enjoy........NOT.
I am more then willing to have a few calls dropped now and then to enjoy the phones and features of the GSM line. Coverage means nothing except where I need it. In fact to use the GPS on my phone I do not need any Carrier coverage at all!!
People travel, people have family in other cities, people go on vacation. I want to feel confident that my phone works where ever I am. Verizon gives that ability to me and millions of other people.
Give it up with the phone argument. Att phones aren't really any better. They just get em first, and usually when CDMA gets 'em, they have made improvements and adjustments on the device. And CDMA has plenty of devices that arent even available on GSM.
Personally I value having great service everywhere I go, great customer service and a solid phone line up more than I value getting a phone first or ...

I do understand...its you that doesnt understand. By your logic, everyone should only make calls from home and never leave their city.
That implies ATT has no service outside of major cities....Wrong.

No one knows that more then me. I have lived in San Diego/LA NJ, Nevada, Missouri, and now SC. I have driven across the country numerous times and never felt I could not get a signal when or where I needed one. I won't give up the flexibility and freedom so I can g...

If you honestly mean to tell me that Verizon is changing everything due to Google, you need to stop smoking dog crap before hitting the Internet.
And Dogism, its nice you're a chapman fanboy. Now pick up rock, crawl in hole, open hands, and let rock fall.

Ummm, Google? Nope. Right now Android is Vaporware and them stepping in and bidding means nothing.

If it were not for Google's opening bid the 700 band would not be open source.
AvgJoe said:it were not for Google's opening bid the 700 band would not be open source.
I disagree. They were going open source in the first place because that was where the market was heading. It just so happens that Google was one of the leaders of that market.

Really??? Is that why they mounted a failed legal challenge to the FCC to keep the spectrum from being open source? The worse thing that could have happened to Verizon is losing the 700mhz spectrum to another carrier. They HAD to buy it. Now they will sit on it awhile deciding what to do with two networks, One open and one closed....
Verizon does not want open source. They have no choice. The G...

You shout open network to the world, but I don't think you understand what you're talking about. Yes, the 700Mhz has to support an open network, and I think that's a good thing, but it is still only a small facet of a much larger whole.
