Expensive Data Plans

I am getting ready to get a new phone and was considering a smartphone. I was amazed that VZW wants $44 for unlimited data that does not include text mess. When it can be bought for $20 at Cingular and include text mess.

Anyone know if they might be reducing this in the near future? Over a years time this is a significant amount of money.

Wait a bit longer for a smartphone that supports EV DO. I just had a chance to play around with Verizon's new Audiovox 6600 smartphone. The data screams on that thing. If I'm not mistaken it'll be a $15 a month charge for unlimited data on your handset.

$15 for unlimited data is way more competitive.

That's $15.00 for browsing on your handset - not tethering it to a laptop or PDA.

No, the $15 is for VCast and Mobile Web, not for smartphone data. Smartphone data, EVDO or National Access, is $44.99 with a $39.99+ rate plan or $49.99 standalone.

It's hard to say whether or not it will go down. I never thought VZW would come out with $9.99 add-a-lines but they surprised me. Who knows... maybe they'll lower the data costs.

Voice plans can drop because voice networks are mature and the investments are old. Verizon has spent big $$$ to deploy EVDO. Don't expect pricing to drop until they get a return on that investment.

I stand corrected. Ouch. That's pricey.

I'll be honest. I really like VzW. I think they're a quality provider, and I think they're the best. But, I don't do business with them, and you touched on the exact reason.

I enjoy using my smartphone to surf the web for quick directions, definitions, maps, and other things and I use POP3 e-mail all the time. Why should I pay $44.99 to Vzw for ...
